                          Fundamental Technology Skills Checklist

 Technology Literacy for Students Begins with Technology Literacy in Teachers
All BCPS instructional staff needs to possess fundamental technology skills in order to meet the
minimum standards for the effective use of technology in teaching and learning. The
Fundamentals checklist below is divided into four categories:
       Fundamentals of PC: Windows
       Telecommunications – E-mail: Microsoft Outlook
       Telecommunications – World Wide Web: Internet Explorer
       Word Processing: Microsoft Word

Instructional staff members should review each section carefully and check any skill that they
already possess. You are strongly encouraged to review these skills at a Windows PC while
completing the checklist. If you have questions about any of the skills described, leave the
corresponding box unchecked. After completing the checklist, use it to determine your need for
professional development activities that are designed to ensure that you have the fundamental
skills needed for the effective use of technology in teaching and learning.

Fundamentals of PC: Windows
       Start up and shut down a computer
            Log in and out of a computer
            Use the mouse to point, click, double-click, and drag
            Use the right and left button on a mouse
            Identify and navigate within various parts of the desktop: Taskbar, Start Menu,
            Icons
            Identify parts of a computer system including keyboard, monitor, CPU, mouse,
            speakers, printer, ports, disk drive, CD-ROM drive
            Open, move, resize, scroll and navigate within a Window
            Open a Program
            Move between two or more Windows
            Use Help including online resources
            Identify and use Windows Explorer
            Copy, move, paste, and rename files, folders, and icons
            Create and use Shortcuts
            Select and use a printer

Telecommunications – E-mail: Microsoft Outlook
        Open Microsoft Outlook
            Identify and use the Menu Bar, Shortcuts, and Standard Toolbar
            Use the Folder List and Preview Pane features
            Compose and send an E-mail message
            Use the Global Address Book, including the Find and Properties features
            Reply to and Forward an E-mail
            Set required options: empty deleted items upon exit, prompt for profile, Spelling
            Access e-mail via the Web: http://email.bcps.org
            Send an E-mail with an attachment
            Retrieve an attachment

Telecommunications – World Wide Web: Internet Explorer
        Open Internet Explorer
           Access a specific Website by entering the appropriate URL in the Address Bar
            Identify and use the buttons on the Standard Toolbar
            Create and use a Favorite
            Use Help including online resources
            Access and use the following Websites:
                               http://www.bcps.org
                               http://www.bcps.org/apps/cpd/
                               https://intranet.bcps.org
                               http://www.msde.state.md.us
            Understand and use the BCPS Telecommunications Policy
            Conduct a simple search using a search engine

            Format a document using justification, margins, and tabs
