We invite you to Petrozavodsk as the comfortable and safe place for learning Russian
language. Our teachers have a great experience in dealing with foreign students. One
of our main principles is individual approach to each student. Our teachers adjust the

“The Russian language course was excellent! Veronika always found exactly the
grammar we requested. The language course was a perfect combination of grammar
rules, exercises, and interesting conversation topics with reading that commonly related
to current grammar topics. I couldn’t ask for a better teacher. . We had everything a
student could want – a variety of exercises from different books that Veronika
composed herself, serious explanations of grammar, real Russian literature, interesting
nonfiction to read including news articles, films to watch at home, and even great
cartoons that were fun and related to grammar and conversation topics. I’m very glad I
had the opportunity to visit Kizhi, Valaam and other excursions. I enjoyed all trips and
loved all of the tours in Russian (very good practice!). All Russian volunteers were nice
and helpful. I’m sure you should develop that practice”.

“I had a unique opportunity to learn some spoken everyday language of Russia as well
as look at the language of economy etc. I also learned a lot about the nuances of
certain verbs and the “finesse” of using Russian verbs. The teachers were really
dedicated to their work, forever smiling and able to involve everybody into the
conversation. I lived in a lovely home and was treated like I am an honored guest. The
food was absolutely delicious. I also had very good conversation practice in the family.
Excursions around Petrozavodks, to Waterfall Kivach and to Kizhi Island were excellent.
This week was a good combination of theory, practice and getting familiar with the
                                                                Russian way of living.”

“I have never attended a language school but I can’t imagine it to be better than this.
Teaching at Enjoy Russian school was very flexible. We could discuss and study
subjects students were interested in. Prepared content was helpful and the course was
useful. My host family was the greatest I could ever have! She knew some English and
Finnish, so it was very helpful to learn me more. It was excellent food, excellent room,
and excellent company. All excursions were really interesting. That is the way to get to
know local people and practice Russian language. And of course there was a cultural
learning. All the volunteers were very helpful and patient. During this program I have
learned more Russian than during several courses in Finland before this. The Russian
language school Enjoy russian made me want to study more!!”

“I am satisfied with Russian language program in Karelia! I do speak better now! The
study was great. I got very lucky to live in such a nice family; I’ve got no complaints
about them! I went on several excursions, sometimes the weather was not really good,
but anyway I liked it. The idea of communicating with Russian volunteers is good! I am
very happy I met such nice people. The organization and administration was just
excellent! I am very happy that I came in Petrozavodsk. I would recommend the

“The Russian language program in Petrozavodsk was very well organized. Everything
seemed to run very smoothly. Working in small groups was very helpful. My teacher
really saw where we needed more help and planned the lessons around this. Teaching
materials were interesting. I learned a lot about Russian culture and Petrozavodsk. The
media material was useful for my research, too. My Russian hostess mother was very
kind and tolerant! Her food was delicious. And it was interesting to see how Russian
people live. I really enjoyed the tour around Petrozavodsk. The Russian volunteers were
really kind, helpful and welcoming – I’ve never experienced such great hospitality
anywhere else! I understand a lot more Russian and am more confident about speaking
now. I’d like to come back to Petrozavodsk and Russian language school Enjoy

Visa and Registration

Please note each student is responsible for preparing documents for visa and obtaining
visa. To apply for visa to enter the Russian Federation you need to get the invitation
letter from our Russian language school.

To get Invitation letter you should:
- Apply for one of our Russian language courses
- Sign the contract
- Transfer the registration fee 50 euros and to send the copy of your passport.
- Contact the nearest Russian Embassy to your location to receive the needed visa
application form(s). Some application forms can be downloaded from the Internet.
Check the Embassy's websites for availability. Follow the Embassy's instructions
carefully preparing your application. Your invitation letter must be included along with
the visa application and any other documents required by the Russian Embassy in your
region when you turn them in to the Embassy.

There are two types of invitations we can provide our students:
1) Invitation required for obtaining the tourist visa (the maximum stay in Russia is 30
days). It takes 3 days to get the invitation by e-mail. The travel agency will send your
documents to the Russian Embassy in your country by fax. You should take into
account embassies don't keep docs sending by fax more than 1-2 days. You should
inform the coordinator about the day of your consulate's visit and the travel agency will
send the docs at this day. Usually the copy of the invitation is enough but some
embassies demand the original one. So you need to contact the embassy beforehand
and specify this info. If the embassy needs the original invitation letter it will be sent to
you by post.

2) Invitation required for obtaining the cultural visa (the maximum stay in Russia is 90
days). It takes about 2 months to get this kind of invitation. The migration office in
Petrozavodsk makes the invitation during a month. Then it is sent to you by post. Here
there are two variants - by ordinary post - it can take 2-3 weeks; or by DHL express post
- it takes 3 days but you should pay for its service extra.

It takes 2 weeks to get visa at Russian Embassy in your country. As a rule you will have
to provide the following documents:
1. completed application form (you can get the form at the consulate or Internet)
2. the copy of your passport (sent by email or fax)

                                                                                          30
3. Invitation letter from the host organization (copy or original).
4. medical insurance
We recommend you to contact the Russian embassy and ask them if you need to
provide more documents (sometimes the rules are changed, sometimes they are
changed too often :))).

Migration card
You will need migration card for registration. Please do not forget to ask the custom
staff at the border to give you the migration card. Otherwise it will be impossible to
register you here.

Everyone has heard about Russian hospitality. If you have yet to experience it, we
recommend staying with one of our Russian families. Furthermore, we are sure that the
best way of practicing your Russian language is to stay with Russian family.

Our experience tells us that students staying in families have more progress in their
Russian language than their classmates staying in the apartments. Most students meet
real friends and keep in touch for many years after the program. The family helps
students to adapt to local conditions and solve some problems if they arise.

Our school Enjoy Russian guarantees that all our students will be placed with approved
Russian families. The program coordinator meets each family and examines living
conditions. The family must then take part in a training before joining the program.

Some general information about Russian families:
As a rule Russian families are small with only one child. Most families live in small
apartments; maximum 4 rooms, kitchen, one bathroom with a toilet. As a rule young
people stay with their parents until 22 (the age of graduation from the university). Some
of them live with their parents longer if they have a low paid job and they don’t have any
possibility to buy or to rent an apartment.
When young people marry, their parents pay all wedding expenses. After the wedding
the parents and the married couple may even live together. There is a strong
connection between parents and their kids, most parents support their children
throughout their lives. While most young people prefer staying in the same city as their
parents so that they have the chance of taking care of them.

                                                                                       34

person.

Petrozavodsk today

Petrozavodsk is a small cozy town. It is situated on a picturesque shore of the Onego
Lake (the second largest lake in Europe). The town stretches for 21.7 km. Nowadays, it
is an important scientific, industry and education centre in the North-West of Russia.
The distance between Petrozavodsk and St.-Petersburg is 460 km, between
Petrozavodsk and Moscow – 1000 km. The town’s population is about 270 000 (that is
about 35 % of the whole population of the republic). There are 28 districts in
Petrozavodsk, 13 of them are pretty big with lots of citizens live in. All the areas’ names
are connected with Petrozavodsk history (Zareka – on the other bank of river,
Drevlyanka – built in the forest area, etc.)
The climate here is quite mild. As the town is situated of the Onega Lake shore it is
usually humid in the summer and freezes in the winter. The difference in temperature is
huge: it can fall down till -35 in winter and still rise 35 above zero. Be also ready for fast
weather changes – it is so unpredictable! (still you can try to relay on official data -
http://rp5.ru/town.php?id=6601 ).
Petrozavodsk has a lot of tradition holidays that are celebrated annually. Last June
weekend is Petrozavodsk “Birthday”. Actually there is no definite date of city birth; still
this date is connected with liberation of Finnish occupation on the 29th of June in 1944.
Annually on this weekend Petrozavodsk turns to a great celebrating area. Lots of little
performances are held all over the city. In the evening Petrozavodsk citizens and guests
enjoy a great firework.
The main event in winter period is Hiperborea festival which is usually in the beginning
of February. During one week creative teams from different countries work at ice
sculptures. Then on weekend special jury decide which one is the best. Besides
watching the sculptures you can enjoy a local folk bands concerts, local craft souvenirs
market, and take part in various joking competitions.
Furthermore there are different sport events all year long (skiing and skating in the
winter, football and volleyball in summer). You can also visit different rock-music
festivals which are very popular here (the most well-known is Vozduh -
http://www.vozduh.info/ ).

                                                                                           39
Today Petrozavodsk lives its own life. At first sight the speed of life here is pretty low,
it’s quite and peaceful. At the same time Petrozavodsk is ready to offer its visitors any
sort of entertainment.
