                                 2002 Directory

This Directory was an idea conceived by Judith Bailey a number of years ago and
which has finally come to fruition. Judith’s idea was to create a directory of ACT
Division of the Australian Association of Career Counsellors, Inc. members so that
we all could learn more about each other, the skills and knowledge that each of us
possesses and practises. It also means that we can call on the expertise of our fellow
members either in the way of referral or if we need specific information about an area.

We are hopeful that as the Directory grows, it can be used as a resource for the public
to actually have information about career counselling and career counsellors. For this
reason we have included a section on what career counsellors do and how to choose a
career counsellor.

The ACT Division of the Australian Association of Career Counsellors, Inc. is made
up of a wide variety of practitioners. There are members working in the education
sector at high school, college and university levels as well as people in the Public
Service, private enterprise and running their own private practices. The Division also
includes many members who are working in the rehabilitation area or who are not
practising career counsellors but their work includes issues around employment and
employability.

Both Judith and I hope that this Directory will be of benefit to all our members.

Trish Carroll
ACT Division
President

                       What Career Counsellors Do

Career counselling is a profession that is just coming into its own. Despite that fact,
many people have no idea of what a career counsellor does. The following list is by
no means definitive but goes some way to clarifying the tasks and activities
undertaken by our members.

Career counsellors and coaches can assist individuals and groups to:

 choose an educational course suitable for their needs
 work out what kind of occupation, job, career might be best for them
 complete a skills audit
 write a resume and/or a job application
 prepare for job interviews
 work through work related issues eg developing a career plan; relationships at
work; being stuck in a particular position
 make informed decisions regarding their careers and work
 work through major career and life transitions

                                     d:\docstoc\working\pdf\273c4589-4ba7-4805-8fcb-c74f00817470.doc 5
                      Choosing a Career Counsellor

These are just guidelines to help you make a choice when looking for a career
counsellor. The ultimate choice is yours. You need to feel comfortable with the
person who is helping you otherwise all the wisdom in the world will not be of any
help.

The counsellor should have a good grasp of the job-hunting process in all its aspects.
They should be able to communicate information clearly and efficiently and should be
able to build rapport with you personally.

There are a number of questions that you can ask over the telephone to each of the
counsellor’s you are talking to. These questions are not definitive and there is
probably other information more specific to your situation that you should also find
out about. The thing is to be prepared to ask questions.

 What is their program? How will they work with you? Do they have particular
instruments or activities that they use?
 How long does each session last?
 What are their fees?
 Given your situation, what kind of time frame would they think is likely? This one
is often tricky to answer, as all sorts of factors are involved including how much time
and energy you are prepared to put in, but you do want to know if you are starting
down a track that will cost hundreds of dollars.
 What experience have they had dealing with clients with your type of situation?
 What are their qualifications? It is true that many good counsellors do not have
specific career counselling qualifications but it is another piece of information that
will help you make a decision.

As stated earlier, the best guide if you are choosing between counsellors that on most
levels are equal, is your own intuitive feelings about how you will get on with this
person. After all, you will have to talk to them about your self, your dreams and your
faults.
