North Lamar High School Choir Department

August 20, 2009

Greetings to the Students and Parents of NLHS Choirs!

I am so excited to welcome you to a new year at North Lamar High
School and our award-winning choir department. You have chosen
to be a part of an organization that can offer you many opportunities
for growth and provide experiences in music that you will remember
for a lifetime.

This handbook is designed to introduce you to the many facets of the
NLHS Choral Department and to answer as many questions as
possible. In an active program like this one, your cooperation helps
insure a successful experience for all. We know that parent support
and involvement in the choir program is the greatest asset we have.

We have had many great years of performances and experiences, as
well as awards. Last year the Ladies Chorale and Chamber Singers
both received superior ratings at UIL Concert & Sight Reading for the
outstanding concert performance. I am confident that this year we
will bring home sweepstakes awards.

Thank you for your interest and support of choir at North Lamar High
School. I am excited to work with you and I look forward to many
enriching experiences throughout this year.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Hildreth, Director

                                  1
              GRADING POLICIES

The student’s six-week grade will be averaged as follows:

     I. DAILY GRADE – 50%

     II. CONCERT & REHEARSAL ATTENDANCE – 30%

     III. ASSIGNMENTS & TESTS – 20%

I. DAILY GRADE 50%
Each week is worth a total of 200 points. 100 points is
determined by the student’s level of participation during class (on-
task behavior, posture, singing, etc. and 100 points is determined by
the student following the classroom rules. The two grades will be
averaged together to determine the grade for the week. Each week’s
grade will be averaged together to determine the 6 weeks grade.

Common deductions from the daily grade are:
tardy (10 pts) no music (15 pts)
no pencil (10 pts) gum (10 pts)
    unexcused absence (50 pts)

II. CONCERT & REHEARSAL ATTENDANCE 30%
Participation in rehearsals and performance outside normal
school hours is a necessary part of choir courses. Attendance is
required for the entirety of all performances and pre-scheduled
rehearsals. Performances are listed on the calendar of events.
Rehearsals either before or after school will be few and scheduled
with plenty of advanced notice. Please be aware that we have a
minimal number of performances and it is of the utmost importance to
be in attendance and on time.

                                  2
An excused absence from a choir rehearsal or concert will require the
same criteria as an excused absence from school—personal illness
where the student has been absent from the entire school day, death
in the family, or family emergency. The absence will not be
excused if the parent has not communicated with the director
PRIOR to the event. It is imperative that the parent contact the
director regarding the absence, as these rehearsals and concerts are
a part of the student’s grade. The choir office number is 903-737-
2003 ext. 1028.

*AN UNEXCUSED ABSENCE FROM A PERFORMANCE WILL
RESULT IN A SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION OF THE SIX-WEEK
GRADE.

*In the event that a student has an EXCUSED absence from a
rehearsal or concert, it will be the student’s responsibility to
complete an assignment determined by the teacher.

III. ASSIGNMENTS & TESTS 20%
Assignments will be completed and tests administered to
monitor the progress in the subject. Special emphasis will be placed
on monitoring individual sight reading skills. Choir concerts will count
at 2 test grades. An assignment will be given to students who have
an excused absence from concerts.

                          Competitions
Only those students who are academically eligible may participate in
competitions. By Texas state law, academic eligibility requires
students to earn a “70” or above in ALL classes on the report card (or
progress report) prior to any competition. Any students who are
academically ineligible will be given an alternate assignment to be
completed in class that will take the place of the competition grade.
This rule also applies to Songs of the Season concert.

USE OF FINE ARTS FACILITIES &
EQUIPMENT
CARE OF THE CHOIR ROOM
We are fortunate to have a very nice facility. We need to make the care and
maintenance of our choir room a daily priority. Remember, there will be no food
or drink in the room, with the exception of water.

AUXILARY ROOMS
There are two closets and one office within our choir room. Do not enter these
rooms without permission. Likewise, we are fortunate to have several practice
rooms along the band hallway for our use as well as the band program. Do not
enter these rooms without permission.

STAGE/AUDITORIUM
You are not to be on the stage or in the auditorium unless you are accompanied
by one of the fine arts directors or teachers.

STEREOS
The portable stereos can be used by students with these guidelines. You must
use it for rehearsal purposes or for specific listening work once you have
obtained the director’s permission. Students are encouraged to rehearse All-
State music in the practice room with the stereo. Only serious practice will be
allowed. No radio music, please.

PAINO
Do not play the piano without permission. The piano gets tuned at the beginning
of each school year and it is our responsibility to maintain it.

CHOIR OFFICE
I have an open door policy for all students. It is my goal to not only be their choir
director by to become a mentor and someone that they feel they can come to in a
time of need. Please respect my office by not sitting behind my desk or use my
computer.

PHONE
If the phone is not in use, and it is an emergency, you may use the phone with
the director’s permission.

WALL MIRROR
The mirrors in this room were intended for students to check posture and stage
presence when they sing. These mirrors are NOT to be used for grooming
purposes and. The curtains will remained closed unless used for specific
purposes to benefit the choirs performance.
