WHAT DO WE MEAN BY INSPIRATION?

• Our faith in the inspiration of the scriptures
can be strengthened by a study of how the
Bible has been passed down through the
ages and the ancient languages that it was
  originally written in.
• Additionally, the work of trained scholars
  studying the thousands of ancient
manuscripts adds to our confidence in the
  Bible. - Mk. 13:31

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY INSPIRATION?

• Are there textual problems evident in our
  modern translations? Yes, making Paul’s
admonition to Timothy still important to us

• That’s why we must apply both faith and
reason to handle the word of truth
  accurately.

Do the Scriptures Claim to be Inspired?
 FALSE VIEWS OF INSPIRATION
• Besides those that outright reject the Bible
as being inspired are those that have
decided that inspiration is something less
  than “God-breathed.”
• Without inspired scripture we would have
no way to comprehend the destiny of man,
the grace of God, the resurrection of Jesus
  or God’s plan for mankind.

Do the Scriptures Claim to be Inspired?
 FALSE VIEWS OF INSPIRATION
• The Bible writers were men with paranormal
  religious insights.
• Like Mohammed or Joseph Smith.
• The Old Testament is a series of hero stories
  passed down to preserve the Jewish tradition;
while the NT is the product of 2nd century
followers of Jesus using the teachings of Paul to
glamorize and canonize Jesus as the Messiah.
• This view negates the Bible as a standard of
  life.

Do the Scriptures Claim to be Inspired?
FALSE VIEWS OF INSPIRATION
• The Bible writers were only inspired
  concerning matters of religious truth.
• Dates, numbers and places may not be
  accurate according to this view.
• This view is sometimes called partial
inspiration and opens up any of the Bible
  to doubt.

Do the Scriptures Claim to be Inspired?
 FALSE VIEWS OF INSPIRATION
• Inspiration means that the reader is
  inspired by their reading.
• In other words the Bible’s meaning is
relative to who is reading it at the time.
• This let’s the reader sift the Bible for the
parts he wants to keep and discard the
  rest.

Do the Scriptures Claim to be Inspired?
FALSE VIEWS OF INSPIRATION
• The Bible was inspired for the first
century, but needs to be reinterpreted
  for the 21st century.
• This attitude is what has allowed false
teaching on divorce, the role of women
  and what constitutes collective worship
  and work.
• Those that hold this view say that
  inspiration is culture driven.

Do the Scriptures Claim to be Inspired?
 FALSE VIEWS OF INSPIRATION
• The Bible is inspired as far as it goes, but
where it is silent individuals and churches
have leeway as to what may be done in the
  name of the Lord.
• Luther held this view and used it to baptize
infants and worship with instrumental music.
• When Peter instructed us to speak as the
“oracles of God,” the implication is for us to
  otherwise keep quiet.

Do the Scriptures Claim to be Inspired?
FALSE VIEWS OF INSPIRATION
• The Bible is inspired but some of its
teachings are not essential to salvation.
• The popular example is “belief is essential
to salvation, but baptism is not.”
• It is not up to man to judge which
commands are essential, it is up to man to
  keep the commands.
  - Mt. 7:21; Lev. 10:1

Do the Scriptures Claim to be Inspired?
 FALSE VIEWS OF INSPIRATION
• The Bible is inspired but is a series of love
letters, not the perfect law of liberty.
• The Bible is a love letter - Jn. 3:16; Eph. 2:8
• But the same Bible also proclaims God’s
  judgment - 2 Cor. 5:10; Rom. 14:12
• John the Apostle of love also said this about
  obedience - 1 Jn. 4:10; 5:3
• Mercy and Justice are only diametrically
opposed in man’s mind, not God’s.

Do the Scriptures Claim to be Inspired?
            CONCLUSION
• How we view the Bible determines our
  faith and practice.
• Acceptance of the inspiration of the Bible
makes it our source of faith, our standard
of morality and our pattern of worship and
  service.
• Rejecting the Bible as God’s Word, makes
it the words of men and no better than any
  other life philosophy.

Do the Scriptures Claim to be Inspired?
             CONCLUSION
• If one does reject the Bible as God’s Truth,
then it becomes a book of lies and cannot
  be trusted at all.
• “Scripture is not to be toyed with. It is not
to be twisted and squeezed into our
needs, wishes or denials. The subtlest and
most common attack of the satanic assault
is a subversion of God’s Word.”
  - Dr. Tim Appleton
