									                     Third Grade Summer Reading Assignment

You are to read two books over the summer and write two book reports using the
graphic organizer provided. The first book is from the Marvin Redpost series, book
#6, A Flying Birthday Cake? by Louis Sachar. The second book is your choice, but
needs to be just right for you (at least 75 pages). A good idea would be to do one
report in July and the other in August.

Follow these directions for when you do your reports:

 Use lined paper to write on or type your report.
 Use the graphic organizer as you read to keep your ideas organized.
          Write a rough draft.
 Proofread and edit your rough draft. Watch for complete sentences,
             including capitals and end marks.
 Skip a line as your write your final draft.
 Make sure your final draft is in your neatest handwriting.
 Write your first and last name on the top of your paper.
 Number your pages and staple them together before handing in.
 Include your graphic organizer and rough draft when you hand in your
             reports.
 Label each part of your report according to the graphic organizer
             (Title/author/illustrator, characters, setting, problem, beginning,
middle, end, opinion, prediction for the next chapter).
 On a separate sheet of white paper, illustrate your favorite part of the
             story.
 Create a caption (one sentence) that tells what is happening in the
             picture.
 This is due the first day of school!

You will also have a summer math assignment. You will need to make sure you
practice your math skills. This can be done with flashcards, math games, and online
resources. A separate sheet is attached to be filled in by you and your parents over
the summer to make sure you keep practicing.
                                               Graphic Organizer

Fill in this graphic organizer as you read your book. You will need one for each book. It does not need to
be in complete sentences. Make sure you fill in all sections to make writing your reports easier.
