    EASTLAND CAREER CENTER STUDENTS STAND OUT AT STATE COMPETITION


Groveport, OH-- The Eastland Career Center Chapter of Business Professionals of America
(BPA) participated in the State Leadership Conference in Columbus, OH on March 17-18, 2011.
Thirty-three students competed in contests on Thursday, March 17, and nineteen received
recognition for placing in the Top 10 on Friday, March 18, at the Awards Ceremony held in
Grove City, OH.

Students who placed in the Top 10 include India Erby, a Financial Services junior from
Whitehall Yearling (Interview Skills); Chikira Ford from Groveport Madison, John Dietzel from
Groveport Madison, Matthew Mendoza from Bloom Carroll, and Chris Workman from Bloom
Carroll, all seniors in Financial Services (Financial Analyst Team); Casmery Martinez, a
Financial Services junior from Whitehall Yearling (Prepared Speech); Sebastian McKown, a
Programming and Software Development junior from Gahanna Lincoln (Java Programming);
Anthony Thompson, a Programming and Software Development senior from Pickerington
Central (C++ Programming); and Mark Zortman, a Programming and Software Development
senior from Reynoldsburg (Java Programming).

Students who placed in the Top 5 and qualified for the National Leadership Conference in
Washington, D.C., May 4-8, 2011, include Doryan Arnold from Gahanna Lincoln, Stephen
Rosales from Groveport Madison, Bank Saelim from Groveport Madison, and Thomas Wimbish
from Reynoldsburg, all seniors in Interactive Media (figure 2: 2nd Place – Video Production
Team); Rain Clark, a Programming and Software Development senior from Gahanna Lincoln (1st
Place - Visual Basic Programming); Sheyenne Jones, a Financial Services junior from Gahanna
Lincoln (2nd Place – Advanced Spreadsheet Applications); Jacob Midkiff, an Interactive Media
junior from Groveport Madison (3rd Place – Digital Media Production); Eric Rauschmeier, a
Programming and Software Development senior from Groveport Madison (4th Place – Database
Applications); Brian Rosfelder, a Programming and Software Development junior from
Groveport Madison (2nd Place – Extemporaneous Speech); and Caleb Thornton, a Programming
and Software Development senior from Groveport Madison (2nd Place – Visual Basic
Programming).

Upon being asked about advancing to
Washington, D.C., the team stated, “While
we didn’t take 1st place at state, we are
excited to go to Nationals and improve our
video and see how we stack up against
students from other states. We are very
fortunate to have this opportunity and thank
both Eastland Career Center and our teacher

excitement as they were called on to the podium earning the right to compete at the National
Leadership Conference. This enthusiasm was evident as I witnessed the students immediately
begin preparations for BPA Nationals. The dedication of these ECC students will surely be
recognized in Washington DC at the BPA National Leadership Conference.”

In addition to competitive events, the chapter had two individuals honored on Friday. Chikira
Ford, a senior in the Financial Services program from Groveport Madison was awarded the Ohio
BPA Rick Mangini Scholarship. Matthew Mendoza (Figure 3),
a senior in the Financial Services program from Bloom Carroll
High School, was named as one of two national officer
candidates for Ohio at the upcoming National Leadership
Conference in May.
