This presentation looks at Communication. As you work through, you
will be prompted to carry out the different activities. You will need a

     Communication

This presentation is an introduction to Communication.

The first section focuses on the evidence requirements (Part B of the standards).

The second section focuses on the teaching and learning of the underpinning
Communication skills (Part A of the standards).

A link at the bottom of the screen allows you to access an electronic copy of the
QCA Guidance, which will be vital as you progress through the presentation. Many
slides also have a link to additional notes. Finally, there is a link to the KSSP
Teaching and Learning Guide for Communication.

     Communication skills

At all levels, the standards for Communication are split into three components.
         Broadly, these are:

Speaking and listening – At Level 1, this involves taking part in discussions. At
Levels 2 and 3, learners are also expected to give talks or presentations of
         increasing sophistication.

Reading – At Level 1, learners are expected to read and obtain straightforward
information. At higher levels, learners are expected to summarise (Level 2) or
synthesise (Level 3) information from increasingly long and complex documents.

Writing – At Level 1, learners should be able to write short, straightforward
documents with accuracy. At Levels 2 and 3, learners are expected to write more
complex and longer documents, choosing the appropriate format to suit their
         purpose.

Activity 1 – Differentiating between the levels

Activity 1 looks at the progression features of Communication as the learner moves
         through the levels.

     Focus on Part B

The next 11 slides look at some features of key skill Communication at Levels 1 to 3.

Each slide focuses on one component of the standards at each level, ie speaking and
         listening, reading and writing.

Some key issues (1) – Images

Candidates are required to use and/or interpret images at each level.

Examples of images include models, plans, sketches, diagrams, pictures, graphs
         and charts but not tables.

Some key issues (2) – Complexity

There is less emphasis on complexity than in the past, but Communication Level 3
         still refers to ‘complex subjects’.

‘Complex subjects’ deal with abstract or sensitive issues and have lines of enquiry
that depend on clear reasoning. The subject matter must be challenging to the
         candidate.

QCA Guidance KSSP T&L Guide Slide 18 of 27

Some key issues (3) – Format

At Levels 1 and 2, learners may be given guidance on an appropriate format for
         their writing.

At Level 3, candidates may be given a task, such as to write an essay, but they must
select and use a structure and format that is appropriate for the particular essay.

Some key issues (4) – Selecting reading material

At Level 1, candidates may be given advice about what to read.

At Levels 2 and 3, candidates must work independently to select material from
documents which might be on a reading list. Candidates must not be given detailed
         chapter headings or page references.

Some key issues (5) – Length of documents

The key skills standards describe length in terms of a minimum number of words.

         At Level 1, there is no prescribed minimum; at Level 2, the minimum is 500 words;
at Level 3, it is 1000 words.

Candidates who substantially exceed the minimum number of words may increase
         the risk of making mistakes.

Some key issues (6) – Accuracy

In written communication, accuracy includes punctuation, spelling and grammar.

At all levels, one or two spelling mistakes are allowed in a document provided that
they are not repeated in a second document. At Levels 2 and 3, they are allowed
         ‘providing meaning is still clear’.

If there are spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors beyond the level at which
the candidate is working, he or she should not be penalised.

Fitness for purpose is an important factor.

Focus on Part A – The underpinning skills

Clearly, before they are assessed, either through the portfolio or the external test,
learners must be given sufficient opportunities to learn, practise and develop their
         Communication skills.

Remember, at all levels, the standards for Communication are broadly based
         around three components:

               speaking and listening

               reading

               writing.

QCA Guidance KSSP T&L Guide Slide 23 of 27

     Teaching the underpinning skills

When considering how to teach the underpinning Communication skills, it might be
         helpful to consider these points:

A learner does not necessarily know that a skill exists unless it is explicitly named
               for him or her.

A learner does not necessarily learn a skill unless it is taught.

A learner does not necessarily acquire a skill unless he or she can practise it.

A learner does not necessarily transfer a skill unless he or she is given other
opportunities where the skill is explicitly named.

QCA Guidance KSSP T&L Guide Slide 24 of 27
