Call for Business Plan:
Proposal Title: STEREOSCOPIC "FLICKR" AND "YOUTUBE" ‐ CREATING, VIEWING, PUBLISHING,
AND SHARING STEREOSCOPIC IMAGES/VIDEOS AT ANYTIME ANYWHERE
Objectives of the Project
StereoScopic (SS) photography has more than 150 years of history. Until today, SS contents (e.g, IMax
movie) are still very expensive to make and can only be done by professionals, despite the
advancements in computer vision techniques and hardware. Never has there been any one‐stop
solution for the consumers to create, edit, publish, and share their own SS contents.
This project's goal is to build a complete platform (both software and hardware) for creating, editing,
viewing, publishing, and sharing SS images/videos. To achieve this goal, we have to research on and
commercialize the following concepts: (1) build a hardware prototype which has paired cameras to take
SS images/videos and the necessary firmware. Such prototype will raise new intentions to the mobile
phone producers who are constantly looking for new features; (2) create user‐friendly editing tools
which process the SS contents using our optimized computer vision algorithms. Such editing tools shall
allow user customization and user content generation; those algorithms also enable normal camera‐
phone users who have only one camera to create SS contents. (3) build several hardware prototypes of
viewers to suit different needs. Such viewer can be on‐screen, projections, handheld devices, and even
paper or plastic glasses; (4) a website portal (like YouTube and Flickr) that allows easy publishing and
sharing of the SS contents.
Potential applications
World’s first online stereoscopic image/ sharing service
Consumer generative stereoscopic contents
Educational contents creation
Stereo Photo Archiving
Opportunities
The technologies developed in this project are patentable. The final applications developed could be a
plug‐in to the existing Flckr or YouTube, or just a unique portal which allows the creation, printing, and
sharing of personal photos. As a project supported by NRF POC, we are also seeking the investment
opportunities when the project is delivered in 1 year time. A solid business proposal is important to help
the researchers in the lab to design the solution towards the market needs, investors’ expectation, and
within suitable market segments.
