2.          Answer only THREE (3) questions from PART A and ONE (1) question from Part B.

3.          Answer for each part must be written is a separate answer booklet and write PART A and
            PART B at the front corner. Start each answer on a new page.

4.          Do not bring any material into the examination room unless permission is given by the
            invigilator.

Illustrate your answers with appropriate sketches

QUESTION 1

a)       Building team is important in construction industry. Write short notes on the
         responsibilities of the building team as listed below:

         i)       Quantity Surveyor
         ii)      Architect
         iii)     Civil & Structural Engineer

b)       Explain the building trades involved in construction of brickwall, plastered with
         cement and sand (1:3) and painted.
                                                                                  (6 marks)

 c)      Soil investigation is an important consideration before construction works
         commenced. Briefly explain two (2) objectives of soil investigation.
                                                                              (4 marks)

QUESTION 2

a)       Define, with examples the terms "Building Elements" and "Building Trades".

                                                                                   (5 marks)

b)       Explain in detail the Probes Mackintosh Method and the Wash Boring Method for
         soil investigation works.

QUESTION 3

a)       Briefly explain four (4) functional requirements of wall.
                                                                                    (8 marks)

b)       Discuss, why building settlement is one of the criteria need to be considered during
         selecting and designing the type of foundation.

PARTB

Answer ONE (1) of the following questions.

QUESTION 1

a)       Explain why mortar is necessary in brickwork and outline five (5) requirements of a
         good mortar.
                                                                                   (7 marks)

b)       Explain how different types of bonding affect the numbers of bricks per metre square
         of brickwork. Use diagram to illustrate your answer.

                                                                                    (8 marks)

c)       Concrete blocks have been used quite extensively for load bearing and non-load
         bearing walls, externally and internally. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of
         using blockwork as building materials.
                                                                                    (10 marks)



QUESTION 2


a)       Granite and Ballast are two types of stones that are commonly used in building
         construction. Discuss where are the origin and the characteristics of these stones.

b)       Lead is an effective barrier to moisture and water but it is not commonly used as
         damp proof materials. Explain why and suggest one (1) type of materials that you
         would recommend to be used as waterproofing membrane.

c)       Give two reasons why brickwork is pointed even though it implies extra labour cost.
