New European Commissioner: Karel De Gucht
Karel De Gucht has left his position as Foreign Minister for Belgium to replace Louis Michel as European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid. Michel has now become a Member of the European Parliament (in the ALDE group, see below). De Gucht’s successor as Foreign Minister is Yves Leterme, the former Belgian Prime Minister. De Gucht becomes the third new commissioner, after Pawel Samecki and Algirdas Semeta (see Agenda Weekly #24 09 for news of their appointments). All three have been appointed for an interim period until 1994 and was a member of the Flemish regional parliament from 1995 to 2003. the next commission takes office. Louis Michel leaves Commission for Parliament
Louis Michel has stepped down as Belgium’s European Commissioner to become an MEP for the ALDE group in the European Parliament. Michel is a Member of the Mouvement Réformaon Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, and a Substitute Member of the Committee on teur, a French-speaking Belgian party. In his new role, he will be a Member of the Committee Development. Michel had been European Commissioner for Development & Humanitarian between 1999 and 2004.

Luisella Pavan-Woolfe has been appointed to head the European Commission’s new delegation to the Council of Europe (CoE). Pavan-Woolfe is currently serving as the Commission’s sion in December 2008. The General Assembly of the SME UNION, the business organisation of the European People’s Party (EPP), has elected Peter Jungen as its new President and Karlheinz Kopf as its new Co-President. They replace Christoph Leitl, who has been elected Honorary President. Jungen, Chairman of Peter Jungen Holding GmbH, is a German Entrepreneur and Business Angel Investor in start-ups in Europe and the USA. Frank Dales has been unanimously elected as the new President of the European network for for three years, but stood down from his post as president following his recent appointment animal welfare, Eurogroup for Animals.
