New European Commissioner: Karel De Gucht Karel De Gucht has left his position as Foreign Minister for Belgium to replace Louis Michel as European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid. Michel has now become a Member of the European Parliament (in the ALDE group, see below). De Gucht’s successor as Foreign Minister is Yves Leterme, the former Belgian Prime Minister. De Gucht becomes the third new commissioner, after Pawel Samecki and Algirdas Semeta (see Agenda Weekly #24 09 for news of their appointments). All three have been appointed for an interim period until 1994 and was a member of the Flemish regional parliament from 1995 to 2003. the next commission takes office. Michel is a Member of the Mouvement Réformaon Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, and a Substitute Member of the Committee on teur, a French-speaking Belgian party. In his new role, he will be a Member of the Committee Development. Michel had been European Commissioner for Development & Humanitarian between 1999 and 2004. Pavan-Woolfe is currently serving as the Commission’s sion in December 2008. Pavan-Woolfe, who was born in Italy, first worked at the Commission in 1975.
