Notre Dame Care Club Celebrates 25 Years
In 1984, seeing the need to serve the local community, Student President Patrick
Domkowski approached Principal Armand Fabbri and asked if a club could be
formed for the purpose. Mr. Fabbri’s response was, “Get yourself a moderator and
you can start the club.” Patrick approached Mrs. Janet Haffner, a member of the
Religion Department and she whole-heartedly accepted the challenge. Since its in-
ception, the Care Club, as it was to be called, has served thousands of people in nu-
merous ways. The Club’s first endeavor was a Christmas party for the first graders
of Blessed Sacrament/St. Mary’s School. This project was such a great success that
it has continued and when Blessed Sacrament School closed the children from St.
Peter’s School became the recipients of fun, games and gifts from Santa. It is inter-
esting to note that many of these children went on to become Notre Dame students.
The Christmas party’s success encouraged the club to offer Easter entertainment.
Volunteers became clowns, magicians, singers, and bakers of wonderful food.
Among the magicians was Mr. Jay Reidy of the ND faculty who thrilled guests
Jessica Berard at a Care Club Event with his mysterious powers. One of the most memorable events occurred at an
Easter celebration when a gentleman who came each day to collect soda cans from the trash bin spotted candy—lots of it—spread around
the grounds in preparation for a jelly bean hunt. Mrs. Haffner spied him from the café picking up all the candy packs. Quick as a bunny
(no pun intended), the club officers rescued the candy and gave the man some to take home. Further on in the Club’s undertakings, visits
were made to local hospitals and nursing homes. Gifts collected from the ND family were distributed and as a result of these experiences
many students went on to volunteer in hospitals and day care centers. Collections of various items were made upon the requests of and for
people in need. One amazing collection came about for residents of the North Avenue Correctional Center. They needed art and writing
supplies. Between the students and a very generous donation of pens from the BIC Corporation in Milford, those who were incarcerated
were amazed at the windfall of supplies. A most touching afternoon came on Grandparent’s Day. The late Monsignor Laurello, who was
in charge of senior services for the Diocese, presided over a prayer service after which entertainment was provided along with a luncheon.
Each grandparent was given a plant representing life. In addition, the tragedy of 9/11 became especially personal for us when Father Bill’s
cousin, a New York City fireman, died in the Twin Towers. While the search for survivors continued, ND students and their families baked
130 pound of cookies for the firemen of Engine Company 54 in NYC. With great anticipation, students asked to be put on the list of those
who visit our neighbors at the Jewish Home for the Elderly Day Care Center. For the past fifteen years, the May “Senior Prom” has been
held – fun, games and dancing are truly enjoyed by all. Since 2006 a special Valentine visit has been added. Many “thank you” notes are
received such as this one—
“To the members of the Notre Dame HS Care Club!

Thank you for the “goody bag” and contents.
My husband and I really appreciate your
thoughtful gesture. How wonderful to hear
                                          of young people who care.
                                      Many, many thanks!” Mia Green
In the spring of 2006 the Club sponsored a drive for mothers and babies in need of many items. This was a Lenten project and a marvelous
success. Religion classes collected everything from pacifiers and rattles to cribs and playpens. Money donations were used to purchase
various products. When Operation Hope asked for help in filling their food pantry, the ND Care Club was there. This year a call was put
out for cell phones – in any condition. The phones are reprogrammed and given free of charge to women who find themselves in abusive
situations. The Care Club was able to deliver over 150 phones for this project. In conjunction with a group of women connected with the
Fairfield Police and Fire Departments, the Care Club joined in their “Project from the Heart.” These caring women collect items and mail
“We Care” boxes to our armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. Notre Dame students, their families and friends responded whole-heartedly
and collected close to one thousand donations to the cause. To all past and present members of the Care Club and to all who have sup-
ported their causes for the past twenty-five (!) years God bless you and thank you for caring. Jesus said, “As long as you did it for the least
of my brothers, you did it for me.” Certainly the Notre Dame community has answered His call and without a doubt, will continue to do so.

continue with the class’s philanthropic spirit, it was decided to raise funds to help with Notre Dame’s new gym renovation. A raffle was held in which $375
was raised. Local businesses, members of the planning committee along with family and friends donated items towards 14 gift bags and baskets.
Alumni Giving Back
Class of ’87 Gives Back in a Time of Need
On January 7, 2008, the Class of 1987 suffered a great loss with the passing of Bozena (Kirejczyk) Abissi. After graduating from ND
in 1987, Bozena received her Masters degree from Fairfield University and was a Senior System Engineer for sixteen years at General
Electric. Bozena leaves behind her husband Charles and three beautiful daughters, eleven year old Izabela Bernadetta Abissi, seven
year old Kristina Ivana Abissi and one year old Katherine Alexandria Abissi. In true ND style, and in a very short time, the Class of
‘87 was able to collect over $3,000 towards an educational fund for Bozena’s children. The Class would like to thank those alumni
who made a donation and shared their remembrances and stories of Bozena. Her children will read these notes one day and know
how special their mom was to a great number of people. If anyone wishes to make a donation, please make a check payable to Abissi
Children’s Education Fund and mail them to Mike Ganino, 85 Millbrook Terrace, Monroe CT 06468. Those making a donation to the
Abissi Children’s Education Fund were: Shannon Adzima Walsh, Diana Allen Birch, Joanne Baskett Chrabolowski, Carla Burton,
Dawn Caserta, Monica Crone Campos, Alice and John Cronin, Michael Deceasare, Charles Dortenzio, Michael Ganino, Meredith
Gilbert Marrero, Nada Glavan, Michelle Cavallo Harper, Julio Herrera, Elizabeth DeMoura Jagiello, Laura Seganos Kealey, Christine

Classmates Gather Together to Raise Funds for the
Kim Wickert Donnelly Scholarship
Members of the Class of 1970 and some from the Class of 1969 got together at the Bridgeport Elks Club on October 20,
2007 to renew old friendships and to raise money for the Kim Wickert Donnelly (‘70) Scholarship Fund. This Scholarship
was started by the Class of 1970 after Kim and Tim Donnelly were killed in their jewelry store in 2005. A large turnout
made the evening, complete with food, music and a raffle, a total success with everyone asking to schedule another event
in the near future. Anyone wishing to donate
to the Kim Wickert Donnelly Scholarship
may do so by contacting the ND Advance-
ment Office.

Papal Honors Bestowed on Four ND Grads
On April 14, 2008 Bishop William E. Lori announced that 14 priests of the Diocese of Bridgeport have received Papal Honors from Pope Benedict
XVI, carrying with them the title of “Monsignor.” Monsignors are recognized as part of the Papal Household, and entitled to wear a distinctive
cassock trimmed in red. There are three levels: (in ascending order) Chaplain to His Holiness, Prelate of Honor to His Holiness, and Protonotary Ap-
ostolic. Several existing Monsignors have moved up a rank or two. Notre Dame is proud that four of its graduates, Monsignor Blasé Gintoli, Class
of 1960, Monsignor Frank McGrath, Class of 1962, Monsignor Christopher Walsh, Class of 1971 and Monsignor Lawrence Carroll, Class of 1972
were among those recognized. A special Evening Prayer celebration for the new Monsignors took place on June 8, 2008 at Sacred Heart University
in Fairfield.
Monsignor Blase M. Gintoli ‘60
Msgr. Blase M. Gintoli,, Pastor of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Fairfield, was named a Prelate of Honor. He previously
held the honor of Chaplain to His Holiness, which he received in 1991. A native of Bridgeport, Msgr. Gintoli, entered Saint Thomas
Seminary in Bloomfield, and completed his seminary studies at Saint Francis Seminary in Loretto, PA. He was ordained in Saint
Augustine Cathedral in 1969. His first assignment was as Parochial Vicar at Saint Peter Parish in Danbury. He served at Holy
Family Parish in Fairfield and Saint Lawrence Parish in Shelton before becoming Pastor of Holy Rosary Parish in Bridgeport. He
became Pastor of Assumption Parish in 1992. “I don’t know why I’m being honored,” says Msgr. Gintoli. “I’m just doing my job.
All I ever wanted to be was a parish priest. With the help of God, I’m going to keep doing my day to day tasks as a parish priest, as
I have for the past 39 years.”

Monsignor Frank C. McGrath ‘62
Msgr. Frank C. McGrath, Pastor of Saint John Parish in Darien, has been named Chaplain to His Holiness. Msgr. McGrath
grew up in Stratford. He completed his seminary studies at Saint Mary Seminary in Baltimore, MD, and was ordained in Saint
Augustine Cathedral in 1970. He received his Masters in Divinity (M.Div.) degree from Saint Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore,
MD. He was Parochial Vicar of Saint Augustine Cathedral in Bridgeport and Saint Cecilia Parish in Stamford, and Chaplain of
the Cathedral Girls’ High School (now Kolbe Cathedral) in Bridgeport. Msgr. McGrath was named Pastor of Our Lady of the
Assumption Parish in Westport in 1993. He served as Director of Clergy Personnel for the Diocese from 1999-2006. He became
Pastor of Our Lady of Peace Parish in Stratford, serving there until receiving his current appointment as Pastor of Saint John’s
in 2006. He is also Chaplain of the Legatus Chapter of Fairfield County. A fire and police chaplain in Westport, and fire chaplain
for Noroton, Msgr. McGrath ministered to Rescue One in New York before, during, and after the September 11 attacks. Follow-
ing that tragedy and working with the Knights of Columbus, he was instrumental in starting the observance of the Blue Mass for police, firefighters,
and emergency personnel in this diocese. “This honor unites the priest more closely in communion with the Holy Father and the entire Church,” says
Msgr. McGrath. “The greatest part of the priesthood has been the chance of representing the Lord, preaching his word, and being with his people
-- being in the public marketplace, so to speak, as the presence of Christ among His people. Proclaiming the Word of God and celebrating all the
Sacraments. I’m grateful, too, for the privilege the Lord gave me to serve in a pastoral way with the priests of this diocese.”

Monsignor Christopher J. Walsh ‘71
Msgr. Christopher J. Walsh, Pastor of Saint Joseph Parish in Shelton, has been named Chaplain to His Holiness. Msgr. Walsh
was born in St. Louis, MO. He graduated from Fairfield University, and completed his seminary studies at the Theological
College of The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. He was ordained in Saint Augustine Cathedral in 1987.
Msgr. Walsh holds a Doctorate in Theology from Catholic University. Msgr. Walsh’s first appointment was as Parochial Vicar
of Saint Patrick Parish in Redding. He served at Saint Lawrence Parish in Shelton before being named Spiritual Director of
the Saint John Fisher Residence and Director of the Diocesan Office for Communications and Editor of the Fairfield County
Catholic in 1992. He gave up both positions in 1998, when he was named Spiritual Director of the Saint John Fisher Seminary
Residence in Stamford and Director for Vocations for the Diocese of Bridgeport. He received his current appointment as Pastor
of Saint Joseph’s in 2005. “Having devoted the majority of my priesthood to the work of priestly formation, first as spiritual
director from Saint John Fisher Residence and then as director of vocations, I am grateful to the Holy Father, and to Bishop
Lori, for their recognition of the importance of this work and my attempts to do it well for the sake of the Church,” says Father
Chris. “I see this honor as underscoring the importance of forming good, holy priest for the Church today. For that reason, I am especially grateful
and humbled to receive this honor.”

Monsignor Lawrence J. Carroll ‘72
Msgr. Lawrence J. Carroll, Pastor of Saint Pius X Parish in Fairfield, has been named Chaplain to His Holiness. Born in Bridge-
port, Msgr. Carroll attended Saint Mary Seminary in Baltimore, MD, and completed his theological studies at Christ the King
Seminary in East Aurora, NY. He was ordained in Saint Augustine Cathedral in 1981. Msgr. Carroll’s first assignment was as
Parochial Vicar of Saint Theresa Parish in Trumbull. He served at Saint Pius, Saint Michael the Archangel Parish in Greenwich,
and Saint James Parish in Stratford. Msgr. Carroll joined the faculty of Notre Dame High School in Fairfield in 1984, and served
as assistant principal from 1994-97, before becoming Pastor of Saint Joseph Parish in Brookfield in 1997. He was named Pastor of
Saint Pius in 2002. “When I left the bishop, all I could think of was my gratitude to God for the grace he has given me to serve His
people,” says Msgr. Carroll. “I have been in a number of different ministries, and the thing that’s been a consistent thread in all of
them is what a privilege it is to invite people to share God’s incredible love for us, and what that means in our lives.”

Athletic Facility Upgrade Plan
Over the past three years, the school has embarked on an aggressive athletic facility upgrade plan. It all began
back in the summer of 2006 when McCarty Stadium, used by football and lacrosse, was completely re-soded
and a new scoreboard was installed. The 2007 school year saw a renovation of the baseball field and contin-
ued upgrades to the Park Avenue Field. Also, because of a new partnership with Sacred Heart University, we
now are able to play our home tennis matches right across the street at NCAA Division I caliber courts. 2008
has been the most exciting year yet, and it has just begun. This summer, we completely renovated our gym,
which is now as nice as any in the state. Also, we will now be playing games in various sports at the Sacred
Heart University Stadium. On September 27th the ND football team played a Friday night game under the
lights v. Stratford. While this work is exciting, there is still much to be done. We are now looking for new
dugouts for baseball, new bleachers for all of our fields and various other projects. If you are interested in
helping or donating to these projects, please contact Theresa Marzik or VJ Sarullo at Notre Dame (203-372-6521).
Field of Dreams – Baseball Field Gets A Makeover
When the Notre Dame baseball team takes the field in the spring of 2009, it will be playing on one of the nicest fields in the area. That
is because late last spring, ND completely renovated Fabbri Field including the infield and left field, as well as adding a new drainage
system. While work started in October 2007, the grand scope of the project did not allow ND to play any home games until the last
week of the 2008 regular season. Even with that, the team finished with 15 total victories. This year, the team will be able to play a
full home schedule. A full schedule of all Notre Dame athletic contests can be found on the Notre Dame website (www.notredame.
org) – just click on the “Athletics” link. Alumni are always welcome back to ND to see the Lancers in action.

over 70 students with over 40 actively participating in
events year round. In addition to helping plan school
liturgies, students also assisted with retreats, helped

collectively more than hundreds of hours of community

to be a big “brother” or “sister” to elementary school

from St. Theresa’s in Trumbull to go see High School

party complete with a visit from Santa and a magic show
from ND’s own Mr. Reidy. Other highlights from last
year included a “Midnight Run” in New York City to distribute goods to the homeless and a visit to see his Holiness Pope
Benedict XVI at a youth festival held at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers. Members also helped McKinley Elementary
School in Bridgeport run their field day at a park in Black Rock and hosted a field day for the fourth through sixth graders
from Blackham Elementary School in Bridgeport. ND students also raised money for several charities including CT Special
Olympics, Homes for the Brave in Bridgeport, the Missionaries of Charity, and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. In addition to
repeating the fun from last year, Notre Dame is happy to be connecting with Building with Books. Building with Books is a
non-profit organization that has students volunteer in service opportunities, meet weekly to learn and discuss social justice
issues, and fundraise to build schools internationally to promote literacy. This year, the campus ministry program seeks to
continue growing to include more students and reach more members of the greater community. We are always looking for
sponsor angels to contribute in assisting us to do more. Anyone who is aware of any opportunities where our youth could
serve or be of help either to a specific individual or a greater community is asked to email Miss Medoff at Medoff@notre-
dame.org.

Alumni Email Addresses Needed!!
In an effort to keep our alumni updated about Notre Dame news, we need your help. With the rising cost of
postage, the alumni office will be turning to emails to update our alumni community with information regarding
ND. Recently, we have gone from two alumni newsletters (The Cornerstone) to one. The Cornerstone will now
be published once per year, in October. It will be a comprehensive publication including ND campus news,
alumni news, reunion information, and our annual donor list. Therefore, periodically we would like to send
emails when necessary. You can email your updated information to the alumni office, fill out the form enclosed
in this publication and send it to the alumni office or fill out the alumni update form online (www.notredame.
org, click on the alumni link).

blessing was Reverend Peter Cipriani, Notre Dame’s Chaplin. The program included readings by Notre Dame students, brief
remarks by Reverend Bill Sangiovanni, Principal and the Honorable Nicholas Panuzio, former Mayor of Bridgeport. Irene
Boyle, Class of 2009 read a student reflection in which she said “...even though the Chapel does not have a high ceiling or el-

to God.” After the dedication and blessing a small reception took place in the ND library. The Panuzio Family Chapel is a
prominent reminder of the fact that Jesus Christ is at the core of everything that occurs at Notre Dame. Alumni and friends
are welcome to attend mass at Notre Dame. Mass is celebrated every day at 7:15 am and on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
at 12:15 and on Tuesday and Thursday 5:15.
