Performance Evaluation in Design of Distributed Control for Switching
System. PhD thesis, NTNU 1982.

Evaluation: This is a scientific dissertation with following highlights:

    Places the development of telematics systems in a technical, economic, psychological and
     social framework.
    Extends the SOM (SDL oriented modeling) development methodology with performance
     evaluation during design, and goes in depth on this (modeling, analysis/mathematics and
     simulation). Performance evaluation in design has later become an important part of
     object oriented programming.
    Software engineering/design by means of SOM applied to a case.
    Object oriented programming by means of Simula/Demos (the basis for languages like
     Java).
    Overview of distributed processing, protocols, flow control.
    Introduction of a new scheme for network access flow control called ’input traffic
     shaping’, that reduces the variance of/shapes the traffic stream. A new mathematical
     queuing model was developed for the scheme, and verified by simulation. The method
     was later adopted for ATM, and called ’the leaky bucket’. The term ‘traffic shaping’ can
     now be found in text books and standards on computer science and communications as a
     general concept.

The ‘Input traffic shaping’ scheme was also presented in a paper at the International
Teletraffic Congress 1983 in Montreal, see publication no. 11.

LOADSIM: A Traffic Simulator for BUDOS Data Network Configurations.

Evaluation:    This scientific report describes the following:

    The SOM system development methodology adopted to develop a simulator for KS500
     computers that communicate over a BUDOS data network.
    Study and queuing modeling of BUDOS and KS500 with hardware and software
    Implementation of the queuing models using the object oriented language Simula/Demos.

The report is part of a series of reports on BUDOS development, see publications 8,13,14,15

A multi Conditional Access MAC Receiver Architecture.

Evaluation:   The MAC TV Chip set developed by Nordic VLSI was the most
              complex chip set worldwide at that time. LAR’s contribution was essential.

Evaluation:    Scientific presentations with following highlights:

Custom integrated circuits for GSM mobile stations. Pre-project.
Nordic VLSI 3jan91.

Evaluation:    The proposed ASICs were in 1991 highly advanced,
               comparable to the state-of-the-art in about 2000.

The following is done:

 Based on the GSM specifications and research at Sintef (who proposed the radio part of
  GSM), architectures for two generations of ASICs for the mobile units are proposed.
  Included is the hardware/software trade-off, HW/SW Co-design.
 Methodology for system-on-chip design has been presented

Evaluation:   The report gives a theoretical background based on general theory and Nordic
              VLSI’s real life, in order to make operational marketing plans. In addition, the
              report is a contribution to make the Nordic VLSI employees more market
              oriented.

Evaluation:   This work was finalized the autumn 1998 in Berkely, California, under a
              contract with Telenor, and builds partly on publications 60-96. Future
              architectures for global, combined networks for digital satellite TV, data
              broadcasting and Web/Internet access were proposed. Large parts of the work
              represent new ideas and concepts.

Optimisation of Multimedia Home Platform Architecture. Feb 1999.

Evaluation:   This work was finalized in 1998 in Berkely, under a contract with Telenor, and
              builds partly on publications 60-96. Architectures with optimal use of ASICs
              and software have been proposed (HW/SW Co-design). The architecture
              includes a common hardware for digital TV and PC, so that the costs can be
              reduced and the performance increased.
              Large parts of the work represent new ideas and concepts.

Evaluation:   The ideas applied in this paper were first proposed in the 1980th (see publications I, IV,
              VI above and 17 below), and further refined after yr 2000, taking into account new
              protocols like IPv6 and RTP, and scene descriptions like VRML and MPEG-4. The
              goal (which has been obtained) is to guarantee the time delay of packets in packet
              networks. This is accomplished by predicting the incoming traffic to every network
              node, dropping selected packets (representing sub-objects of a scene) when the queues
              become too large, and ordering nodes that are sources of traffic to scale down
              temporarily. After a short time, the basic traffic generators are asked to scale down.
              This provides fast transient response to overload traffic situations, and prevents such
              situations to spread in the network. Admission control is automatically included. The
              quality of the content will be time-varying, using the 2D interlace coding principle for
              sub-objects in a scene, and interpolation before presentation. Every person in Europe
              can be offered the personal transport capacity of 32 Mbps. Packet delays are mainly
              determined by propagation delays (2-32 milliseconds). The network supports
              Distributed Multimedia Plays, introduced in publication XIII. The channels based on
              optical fibers can be utilized nearly 100%
