Song and food are universal elements – life‟s ingredients that feed our soul, nourish our senses, and open our minds. Poetry, music, song and dance allow us to return to our real world. Our world, in this case, is inspired by the most translated poet on the planet – Pablo Neruda. “CANTO NERUDA” is a celebration of the life and poetic works of Neruda and has been structured around fourteen of Neruda‟s odes which have been set to music by the composers Eugenio Chabaneau (Argentina) and Ermanno Dodaro (Italy) and are sung by Tosi Poleri, the Italian/American soprano. Ms. Poleri is accompanied by a ten-piece ensemble of international musicians – guitar, piano, acoustic bass, percussion, violin, indigenous South American flutes and voices. The melody and harmony of each piece are inspired by the powerful images and feelings evoked by each poem, elegantly uniting the sounds of Latin American folk music with classical elements. The production also includes two contemporary dancers who physically express the sentiments of the poetic works of Neruda. Appropriate lighting effects and film images are used to highlight the various poetic themes of the odes. Music and dance set to inspired words is an ancient art form that evolved out of a basic need to communicate. In today‟s fast-paced world, it is more important than ever to nourish the poetic connection in the human heart. The performance presents an innovative musical experience and introduces two important elements: cultural exchange, as the musical styles and musicians come from diverse geographical backgrounds ( Italy, Ecuador, USA, Ivory Coast and Cuba) and the expression of beauty, happiness, hope and love through Pablo Neruda‟s words. “CANTO NERUDA” is a truly global project that befits a global poet. The inspiration for “CANTO NERUDA” came about in the Summer of 2000 when Tosi Poleri proposed to Eugenio Chabaneau to set one of Neruda‟s odes to music for the World Festival of Sacred Music in Thailand; a project for the Third Millenium promoted by HH the Dalai Lama. Following the success at that Festival with one such piece, „Oda a La Esperanza‟ (Ode to Hope), Eugenio Chabaneau agreed to compose music for another nine „odas‟ of Pablo Neruda which resulted in the creation of the CD „CANTO NERUDA‟. “CANTO NERUDA” has two aspirations, to be a vehicle for enjoyment, exuberance, vivacity, festive dance, lively sounds, love for life: but at the same time to encourage meditation, obligation, generosity and care. The specific intent is to give active support to humanitarian initiatives worldwide, particularly to projects concerned with the care, education, growth and well-being of children. “CANTO NERUDA” therefore will donate 60% of the proceeds from ticket sales to specific humanitarian projects in Africa, Asia, Page 3 Proposal for Canto Neruda Project December 2003 Eastern Europe and South America, and 15% of the proceeds from the CD sales to EMERGENCY (an Italian Non-governmental Organization providing medical and surgical assistance to civilian victims of war). Since 2004 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Pablo Neruda, we believe this is a fitting moment for an international celebration of this great poet‟s life and work and the “CANTO NERUDA” project is superbly adapted to be part of such a celebration. We also believe that “CANTO NERUDA” is an investment in man‟s humanity towards man and we are optimistic that you will assist us in bringing this event to the forming minds and hearts of varied audiences. We are confident that the inclusion of the “CANTO NERUDA” concert /event in your programming would be an excellent opportunity to recognize the centennial celebration. The “CANTO NERUDA” project has received official patronage from the following organizations: Embassy of Chile, Rome, Italy, Presidential Commission for the 2004 Centennial celebration of the birth of Pablo Neruda ( Santiago) and RAI Italian television. We sincerely hope that this initiative is of interest to you and would be very happy to elaborate further on the project directly with the relevant person in your organization. On request, we can send an MP3 demo of some pieces from the CD “CANTO NERUDA” or in the case of immediate interest, a full CD. I thank you very much in advance for your time and consideration, and look forward to working with your organization in the very near future. With best regards, Tosi Poleri Page 4 Proposal for Canto Neruda Project December 2003 Proposal 1 The Canto Neruda project would comprise a European tour and a U.S. tour 2, both tours comprising 15 performances each. Negotiations are also in progress, with the relevant consulates, for concerts in Santiago, Chile in 2004 and five additional concerts each in India and Japan. However these additional concerts are not included in the present budget document. The début concert for the tour is tentatively scheduled for mid-May 2004 in Rome. These concerts would celebrate the life and work of Pablo Neruda. Fourteen of Neruda's odes have been set to music by the composers Eugenio Chabaneau (Argentina), and Ermanno Dodaro ( Italy) and would be sung by Tosi Poleri, the Italian/American soprano. The performance would include a ten-piece ensemble of international musicians originating from such diverse countries as Cuba, Ecuador, Italy, Ivory Coast, and USA and two contemporary dancers Sarah Pletts (USA) and Ivan Truol (Chile), thus giving the production a truly universal flavour. The performances aim at diffusing the most significant poetic works of Pablo Neruda concerning homage to life, hope, solidarity between peoples and cultures, respect for nature and peace in society. The central theme of the performance would be Pablo Neruda‟s Elemental Odes which would be performed in their original language with the possibility of simultaneous translation on appropriate display panels in the language of the venue country. Musically, the vocalist would be accompanied by guitar, acoustic bass, percussion, violin, indigenous South American flutes and voices. The melody and harmony of each piece are inspired by the powerful images and feelings evoked by each poem, elegantly uniting the sounds of Latin American folk music with classical elements. The production would also include two contemporary dancers who would physically express the sentiments of the poetic works of Neruda. For example, to highlight Neruda‟s love for dancing, the couple would dance to the bolero “Oda al dia feliz”. The scenography would include enveloping scrolling lights that would project the words of the poems in various languages onto the performers, thus illustrating and confirming Neruda‟s fame as the most read poet on this planet. Use would be made of film images relevant to Neruda‟s life and work, with images related to the text of the poetry (Ode to the Tomato, Ode to the Onion, Ode to Life, Ode to Thanks, etc.). Filmed inserts of Neruda‟s artistic contemporaries would also be included ( Federico Garcia Lorca, Louis Aragon, Paul Eluard, etc.,) and images of Pablo Picasso‟s paintings. Another element of the evening would be a tribute to Pablo Neruda by a local celebrity who would read one of Neruda‟s odes in the local language. 1 Rome, Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Helsinki, Marseille, Milan, Naples, Paris, Seville, Valencia. 2 New York (Apollo theatre), Atlanta (Fox theatre), Austin, Boston, Chicago, Denver (Aspen/Boulder), Los Angeles (San Diego), Memphis, Miami, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Santa Fe, Seattle. Page 5 Proposal for Canto Neruda Project December 2003 The Canto Neruda project follows the production of the CD Canto Neruda which will be further publicized during the tour and which will be available for purchase at the theatres where the concerts will be held . In addition it is proposed to produce and sell T-shirts with designs inspired by the project, for example utilizing text from the Odes or with designs related to images of the texts, e.g. a flying tomato. It is also proposed to produce a video recording of the event which could be used for promotional purposes and would document the project for any future use. Page 6 Proposal for Canto Neruda Project December 2003 Motivation The broad aspiration behind the Canto Neruda project is to diffuse a message of love for life, respect for the earth and hope for mankind. The very special fusion of the metric poetry of Neruda with a harmonious and original musical score will assure these concerts a universal appeal and stimulate sentiments of solidarity, happiness and serenity in audiences worldwide. However the intention is also that the diffusion of this message should not be limited to the performance itself but should in turn give rise to a more universal sentiment of reflection and action towards a more concrete participation in daily life and solidarity towards those most in need. The Canto Neruda project has two aspirations to be a vehicle for enjoyment, exuberance, vivacity, festive dance, lively sounds, love for life; but at the same time to encourage meditation, obligation, generosity and care. The specific intent is to give active support to humanitarian initiatives worldwide, particularly those projects concerned with the care, education, growth and well-being of children. Canto Neruda would particularly target the following regions for its choice of projects: Africa: A particularly tormented region but a region where there are enormous opportunities for change. An area where death and suffering are so visible but also a region of great natural resources and beauty. A specific project for this region could be Rwanda onlus www.projettorwanda.org This is a project which supports orphans and women in Rwanda. Asia: A region of enormous contrasts where a profound spirituality pervades collective life. How to reconcile transcendence with pain, participation with distance, presence and absence? A specific project in this region could be support of Nepalese and Tibetan children through either a project organized by Médecin sans Frontières or by Tibet House. Eastern Europe: Europe is still a child. Sometimes we imagine Europe as a wise lady who observes an infantile multi-coloured world through a window, but Europe is still in adolescence. It is growing but it should not hide its ills with feigned self- assurance. A specific project for Eastern Europe could be: www.operationsmile.it , a non-profit organization which with the assistance of volunteer doctors undertakes corrective plastic surgery operations on children to correct congenital malformations or injuries resulting from traumas. South America: A project could also possibly be identified for Argentina or Chile taking into consideration Pablo Neruda‟s country of origin. Page 7 Proposal for Canto Neruda Project December 2003 Provisional Communication Plan It is believed to be of the utmost importance to approach the most prestigious institutional organs of Italy and of the European Union, and international Non Governmental Organizations regarding possible patronage of the Canto Neruda project. The objective of the Communication Plan for the Canto Neruda project is essentially that of launching a message which blends the cultural concept of the initiative with its strong humanitarian commitment. The target of the Project is not limited to a homogenous group of issues but aims at a wider scheme. The style, character and image of the Communication Plan will be carefully developed in order to evoke positive sentiments of optimism and happiness. The tone of the message will be concise and to the point in order to simply blend language and image. Choice of Media the variety of the target audience signifies that the message must be communicated through a mix of media channels: newspapers, magazines, radio, television and Internet; the geographical area to be covered is vast so Internet, which can provide a large international audience, will certainly prove to be one of the privileged media choices. Launch and Support of the Event distribution of press releases to press agencies, newspapers, magazines and radio/television networks in Italy and abroad; distribution of press releases to newspapers, magazines, etc., specializing in related areas (music, literature, humanitarian associations, local Chilean consulates and cultural entities, Non Governmental Organizations, the Presidential Commission for the Centennial Commemoration of the birth of Pablo Neruda, Neruda Foundation); press conference to be organized in Rome at a prestigious venue in order to present the project, the venue should be agreed upon together with the institutions who decide to award patronage to the event; ensure that the event is included in the official calendar of events programmed for 2004 in the cities where the concerts will take place (also through appropriate websites); ensure inclusion of the event in the activities and programmes for 2004 of the various theatres that will host the event (also through the appropriate websites); purchase pages for publicity purposes in magazines of the main European and USA airline companies; Page 8 Proposal for Canto Neruda Project December 2003 prepare articles to be published in Italian and foreign newspapers and magazines; preparation of a magazine (one issue only, to be translated into two or three languages and made available in approximately 20,000 copies) for free distribution containing information concerning the programme of the event, the life and work of Pablo Neruda, the activities of the Terzo Millennio Foundation, and the humanitarian projects which would receive a percentage of the income from the tour. This magazine could also be put on sale at the venue of each concert; production of press folders that could be distributed in each of the cities where the concerts are to be held; formulate agreements aimed at obtaining links to the Canto Neruda website through other main websites or international search engines; merchandising. In as much as this is a provisional communication plan, it will be completed, confirmed and finalized as a specifically defined document, only in the final working plans of the entire project. This project, elaborated by the artists Eugenio Chabaneau and Tosi Poleri is an initiative that will become part of the activities being organized in order to pay homage to Pablo Neruda, poet and Nobel Prize Winner for Literature, upon the centenary celebration of his birth (2004). In addition, the events foreseen as part of the „Canto Neruda‟ project are of a high cultural content and therefore are to be considered a further step towards strengthening the future collaboration between the artistic spheres of Italy and Chile. Patricia Rivadeneir Counsellor Cultural Affairs Page 14 Proposal for Canto Neruda Project December 2003 The work of CANTO NERUDA offers a rare opportunity to listen to music and poetry in harmony. Ten odes of Pablo Neruda have been skillfully “ dressed ” by the compositions of Argentine guitarist Eugenio Chabaneau and author of the project- Italian/American singer, Tosi Poleri, who sings with profound passion and punctuality, all under a technical profile. The listener is invited into a kaleidoscopic, poetic voyage, passing through places and “flavors” of South America- among traditional sounds, Andean rhythms, all the while enchanted by the words of the poet. CANTO NERUDA is an important work, where the music contributes the most immediate and efficient language to unite populations and their varied cultural histories-it is that art with which a trusted friend serenely “takes you by the hand” and accompanies you to places more pure than being. It is in this case, that I present to you Pablo Neruda and his poetic universe, with his “Ode to Life” in a world where often life and humanity are quite improbable. Edizioni Musicali III Millennio Claudio Pelati Artistic Director Page 15 Proposal for Canto Neruda Project December 2003 Dear Ms. Poleri, I would like to thank you for giving us the opportunity to film and successively to transmit, the evening which you and your collaborators organized at La Palma Club in Rome. The content of „Canto Neruda‟ is perfectly in line with the editorial ideas of RaiNotte which are focussed on producing programmes of merit with quality content. The mixture of different art forms, poetry, music, dance, is one of the objectives of our programmes, which seek to encourage humanism, reflection, spirituality and solidarity in an age, that of the present day, which is characterized by superficiality. Therefore an event such as „Canto Neruda‟ is superbly adapted to contribute to the enrichment of the poetic predisposition which is present in all our hearts. I am also very pleased to let you know that the transmission had a very good audience. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you every success which you work merits. I thank you again.
