Dear Headteacher
Would you like FREE training, consultancy, support and resources to develop Economic
Wellbeing and Financial capability across the curriculum?
You may have heard recently of the announcement of the plans to continue to develop financial
education within schools, as part of the national action plan for developing financial capability.
The £10m three-year programme called My Money, will be managed and delivered by pfeg
(Personal Finance Education Group) on behalf of the DCSF and HM Treasury. The
Worcestershire Healthy Schools Team has already established a productive working relationship
with pfeg and we are excited about the new opportunities which My Money provides.
The programme aims for the first time, to develop a planned and coherent approach to financial
education for our young people within formal education settings and we will be working with pfeg
to develop capacity and support within and across primary and secondary schools.
As part of the My Money programme you will receive:
FREE consultancy, training and support from pfeg to assist your school in developing
financially capability across the curriculum, including the production of bespoke schemes
of work and lesson plans
FREE resources (both print and electronic)
Ideas for supporting financial capability through whole school initiatives, e.g. school bank.
Support for parents/carers, including a My Money workshop
The programme will also feature a high-profile national My Money Week, encompassing
exciting whole-school activities to engage pupils, parents and teachers
(More detailed information can be found on the enclosed information sheet).
Within Worcestershire, we wish to work with pyramids of schools to ensure a planned and
coherent financial education programme from Early Years to KS4/5.

What is My Money?
My Money is a £10m financial education programme developed and executed, on behalf of the
Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) by pfeg (the Personal Finance Education
Group) and its partners. pfeg is heading the initiative in its role as the leading finance education
organisation helping schools to plan and teach financial capability relevant to student’s lives and
needs (see www.pfeg.org for more information).
My Money is a key component of the Financial Capability Action Plan recently launched by HM
Treasury and the Financial Services Authority (FSA) to help people handle their finances better.
It is the first project to provide joined-up financial education starting from when a child first starts
school, aged four and taking them through to the age of 19. It will focus on the potential financial
challenges and opportunities they may face during their school life and beyond.
As a result of extensive research among young people, parents and teachers, the programme
acknowledges the pressures already upon schools and teachers and will deliver resources to provide
confidence and support in integrating personal finance in their curriculum.
pfeg, together with its partners, is currently creating resources that can be incorporated into subject-
specific areas for secondary schools as well as PSHE education and a cross-curricular approach for
primary schools. The programme will run from 2008 to 2011.
Other consortium partners and how they will support My Money:
Edcoms – for production of the materials, print and web-based, for research and for support for
communications (www.edcoms.co.uk)
PSHE Association – for strong curricular-based subject link and other national infrastructure into
local authorities and schools (www.pshe-association.org.uk)
NCB – for their experience of young people’s advocacy and experience with running themed weeks
(www.ncb.org.uk)
What will it look like?
My Money will create stimulating learning opportunities, and increase the capacity of teachers and
local authority staff to deliver and leave a lasting legacy for financial capability work in schools in line
with the aspirations of Every Child Matters. The programme will deliver coherent thinking and
activities that are planned to dovetail with all key stages.
The programme will aim to:
Build capacity for those working in local authorities and in schools
Provide materials, training and support for schools
Develop a compelling and energetically delivered communications strategy
Deliver an annual activity week: My Money Week for the first week of July 2009
For secondary schools
My Money comes at the same time as changes to the secondary school curriculum. In March 2008,
Ofsted issued a report which endorsed the importance of every school providing a planned and
coherent approach to personal finance education. As such, from the autumn ‘economic wellbeing and
financial capability’ will be a programme of study within Personal, Social, Health and Economic
(PSHE) education. In addition, financial capability features within the new secondary curriculum for
mathematics, integrating practical money skills into lessons.
pfeg’s existing programme for secondary schools called Learning Money Matters (supported by the
FSA) is now in some 2,700 schools and delivered by a network of consultants, will dovetail with My
Money and support its wider aim of creating a coherent and regular offering for pupils.
For primary schools
Teaching aspects of personal finance has always been an important part of the primary curriculum.
The greatest opportunities are within PSHE and citizenship and mathematics. These are by no means
the only curriculum areas though. pfeg, with support from HSBC has already been working in a
number of local authorities developing a project called What Money Means, supporting and
encouraging clusters of primary schools to develop materials and approaches to integrate financial
education into national curriculum learning. The My Money programme will help spread the success
of What Money Means more widely. In addition it will provide a coherent approach across primary
and secondary education to ensure that financial education is consistent from one phase to the next.
Nine regional consultants
The programme will be delivered by pfeg through a network of nine regional consultants, (linking with
regional PSHE team leads) employed specifically to work with local authorities to cultivate their
support and engage schools in their area in teaching personal finance. The consultants all have an
educational background and bring an understanding of the school and local authority contexts, and
the practical delivery of a programme like My Money.
My Money Week
A central feature of the programme will be a high profile annual money awareness week during early
July 2009 which will provide a focal point for schools to become involved at a level that suits them. It
will also highlight the need for parents and the wider community to gain skills and confidence in
financial matters to support young people’s learning in school.
Materials and resources
For all schools we will be developing support materials for delivery in print and electronic formats.
Learning Money Matters (pfeg’s existing secondary school programme) consultants will provide
routes to secondary schools while My Money consultants will work to leverage impact in local
authorities and also primary settings linking with What Money Means (pfeg’s existing primary school
programme). Materials produced will include:
A website
My Money Week support materials
Parents’ guides
Briefing pack for Local Authorities and other stakeholders
Subject handbooks
Child Trust Fund materials for KS2 and 4
