COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is intended to provide technical, programming and
administrative background and experience for a career with the World-Wide Web. Topics include web
server administration, page design, web protocols, programming for the web, and Web site management
tools. Students should have a working familiarity with the Internet and the World-Wide Web.

EVALUATION:

Students will be evaluated base on their performance on in-class website design exercises, as well as implementation of
external internet accessible website. Students will also be evaluated on quizzes and exams.

UNITS

         Unit 1 Web Server Administration

                  General Outcome:

                            1.0    The student shall: be able to discuss how to maintain and organize a web server.

                  Specific Measurable Learning Outcomes:
                          Upon successful completion of this unit, the student shall be able to:

         1.1      Distinguish Internet Service Providers (ISP) from Internet Presence Providers (IPP).

         1.2      Describe how web servers work.

         1.3      Describe the various parts of a web server.

         1.4      Demonstrate how to install and maintain a web server.

Unit 2          Advanced Web Design and Authoring

         General Outcome:

                2.0    The student shall: be able to discuss how to design a properly laid out Web Site
                       using software tools.

                 Upon successful completion of this unit, the student shall be able to:

2.1      Demonstrate how to design a Web Site.

2.2      Demonstrate the Basics of creating a Web Page with HTML.

2.3      Use advanced HTML.

2.4      Demonstrate how to create and use image maps, digital video, audio and images.

3.1      Define and discuss HTTP.

3.2      Demonstrate the use of Telnet.

3.3      Demonstrate the use of FTP.

3.4      Demonstrate the use of Gopher.

3.5      Demonstrate how Internet E-mail works.

3.6      Use standard E-mail software packages.

4.1    Use perl to program a page hit counter.

4.2    Use Java to program a graphical interface tool.

4.3    Use JavaScript to program a running text based sign.
