                                Introduction

This booklet provides an overview of Glow Web Hosting and its
potential use in learning and teaching. There are instructions on
setting up Glow Web Hosting and exploring its functionality for the
purposes of this pilot.

Glow is web-based and can be used wherever users have access to an
internet connection. During the pilot you will be able to access Glow
from both school and home. Each Glow user has their own unique
username and password which gives access to information and
resources appropriate to the user’s role; thus, a pupil’s access to Glow
will differ from staff users.

What is the Glow Web Hosting service?

The Glow Web Hosting service allows a Glow user to own, add content
to and publish a web site.

A web site is a group of related web pages published on the world wide
web or within an intranet such as Glow. The various pages of a web
site are interconnected using hyperlinks which, when clicked, will
navigate the user to another area of the web site. Most web sites have
a home page as their starting point.

The right to use the Glow Web Hosting service has to be granted to a
user by an administrator of Glow. This duty will usually fall to a local
authority administrator but could be delegated to the school or
establishment administrator of Glow.

Why use the Glow Web Hosting service?

Schools that do not already have a web presence could take advantage
of the Glow service in order to publish their school web site for the
world to see.

Users can make various types of content visible to a much larger
audience. For example, work could be shared across schools within
Glow without the need to invite Glow users into a group, good practice
could be highlighted to the wider internet community, school events
could be publicised to the local community.

The service could also provide Glow users with an additional area for
distributing files if their portal space allocations have been used up.
For example, a Glow user could create a basic web site for the purpose
of storing files for upload and download.

Quick start guide: Glow Web Hosting

The flexibility of publishing web pages could allow for more creativity
in the presentation of information.

Pupils who have the knowledge to create web pages could be allowed
to present their work in this format rather than using more traditional
methods.

approval to set up a web site

Requesting a Web Site

1. Log on to Glow.

2. Click on My Glow from the left-hand navigation bar.

Quick start guide: Glow Web Hosting

4. The Request a new web site page will appear. Fill out the form as
     follows:

     • Web Site Name: This is a mandatory field. Enter yourname
Test Web Site. Note: do not use apostrophes in your name
e.g. Anita’s Test Web Site. Apostrophes are often used by
programmers as special characters in their code and can cause
your system confusion if used in the web site name!

     • Storage Requested: The maximum storage space for a
requested web site is 50MB. From the drop-down menu select
         25MB.

     • Web Site Expires: This box is ticked by default. For a web site
request with no expiry date you would remove the tick. For
the purpose of this tutorial, leave the tick and set an expiry
         date.

     • Expiry Date: You can either enter a date manually in the

format DD/MM/YYYY or use the calendar icon to select a
date. Enter a date one week from today’s date.

     • Web Site Access: This drop-down menu allows you to chose
between letting only selected Glow users see your website or
publishing your web site for all web users to see. For the
purpose of this exercise, please select Internal intranet.

     • Select groups from the chosen establishment: The
establishments you can select groups from are: your school,
your local authority and the national portal. Select your
         school from the drop-down menu.

     • Available Groups: This screen will change to display the
         groups from your school.

         a) The groups available to you will be different from the
            screen shot above.
            • From Available Groups, click on the group that you
want to see your web site.
            • Click on Select Group>> to move the group over to
                Selected Groups.
         b) Comments: Add any appropriate comments e.g. this is a
            test web site only!
Please note: The following special characters .,;?!-_ are
allowed in the comments field but others, such as an
            apostrophe, will cause an error.

         c) Click the tick box to indicate that the acceptable usage
            policy guidelines will be followed.

         d) Click on Submit Request (near top of form) to be
            returned to My Glow.

Note: At this point, if you have omitted important data or
used unsuitable characters in your comments, Glow will
alert you with errors in red.

Viewing web site requests

All requests for web site approval or amendments to web sites, such
as extending the expiry date, have to be approved. The approval of
requests is carried out by the Accounts and Services Manager. You will
need to wait for the Accounts and Services Manager to approve your
request.
Your web site requests are listed at the bottom of the Web Hosting –
Web Site Management web part.

1. Click on the Web Site URL to take you to the ‘home’ page of
your web site. When a new web site is approved, Glow
automatically creates a home page for your site called
‘default.htm’. The home page contains the following message:

If you know how to edit HTML pages, you can change this page to
reflect the home page of your web site. This guide does not cover
editing of HTML pages. Tutorial 3 will guide you through the
process of uploading ready-made html pages.

Tutorial 3 – Managing the content of an
                       approved web site

In this tutorial you will:

• use the Web Hosting – Web Site Management web part to upload
content to your approved web site

Glow supports the upload of content using secure file transfer
protocol (ftp/tls) via a suitable third party software client. This
tutorial, however, will use the upload tool built into Glow.

Glow Web Hosting does not provide tools for creating HTML pages.
For the purpose of this tutorial, you could create your own HTML
pages using propriety software or HTML code or use the sample files
provided on the resources CD. This guide makes use of the sample
files.

To upload content to your approved web site

1. Log on to Glow.

2. Click on My Glow from the left-hand navigation bar.

3. Select Manage content…. on the right hand side of your
      approved web site details.

4. A new window will open.

The Managing site window details all files and folders associated
with your web site. The screen shot above is displaying the
‘default.htm’ page that is automatically created when a web site
     is approved.

5. Click on Upload.

10. Repeat steps 5 to 9 to upload the files page1, page2 and
    page3.

separate folder. You need to create a folder in the Managing Site
window to store the graphic images. Click on New Folder.

running, mcdonaldsfr and teacher_whiteboard to the
         images folder.

    16. Click on Up to return to the top level of the Managing site
         window.

    17. You now have to make sure that Glow will open your uploaded
page first instead of the ‘default.htm’ page that was auto-
matically created when your web site was approved.

    18. Select the default.htm file by clicking on the radio button to the
         left of the file name.
