     “Volunteers Wanted!”
DIRAmed is developing a technology to allow people with dia- med DIRA
betes to measure blood glucose levels without having to take
a blood sample. If our research is successful, we expect it to
lead to a device that painlessly determines the person’s glucose level by taking measurements
directly through the skin with an invisible laser.
We are currently evaluating the performance of a research instrument using Raman spectros-
copy technology to measure glucose in the skin. The evaluation involves asking healthy (non-
diabetic) “volunteers” to undergo a test that is similar to the standard Glucose Tolerance Test
that is used to detect the onset of diabetes. The test involves an approximately 90-minute visit
to our laboratory, at least three hours after eating (skipping breakfast or lunch is even better).
The volunteers will be asked for seven standard finger prick blood glucose samples during the
     testing.
In addition to learning about your body’s response to glucose, those who volunteer will receive
a gift certificate to a local restaurant.
For more information or to volunteer, please contact Beth Mitchell at 614-487-3660.
