                        PAST TENSE ( GEÇMİŞ ZAMAN)

A – Kullanım Alanları:
Past Tense (Geçmiş Zaman) kalıbını, geçmişte belirli bir zamanda başlamış ve bitmiş
eylemler için kullanılır.
Örnek:
She painted the wall. (Duvarı boyadı.)
The game started at ten o’clock. (Oyun saat onda başladı.)

B – Geçmiş Zaman‟da Fiile Getirilen Ekler:
Simple Past Tense’de fiillerin 2. hali kullanılmaktadır. Ancak fiillerin ikinci hali sadece düz
cümlede kullanılır. Olumsuz ve soru cümlelerinde fillerin birinci hali kullanılır.

Geçmiş zaman kalıpları için fiiller ikiye ayrılırlar:
Bunlar Düzenli ( regular ) ve Düzensiz ( irregular ) fiiller ( verbs ) diye adlandırılır.

Düzenli filler ( regular verbs)
1. Geçmiş zamanda düzenli fiile getirilen standart ek –ed ekidir.
 Example: want >> wanted
             clean >> cleaned
              wash >> washed

2. Eğer fiil “e” ya da “ee” harfleriyle bitiyorsa, fiile sadece “-d” eki getirilir.
     move >> moved
      live >> lived
     agree >>agreed

3. Sonu “-y” ile biten fiillerde (“y” harfinden önce sessiz harf olması durumunda) bu harf “-i”
harfine dönüşür ve yukarıdaki maddede bahsettiğimiz “-ed” eki getirilir:
      carry >> carried
      bury >> burried
     marry >> married

4. Bir sesli ve bir sessiz harfle biten tek heceli fiillerde son harf ikilenir:
     drop >> dropped
      rob >> robbed
       fit >> fitted

5. Ancak bu şekildeki fiillerin sonu “x”,“w”, ve “y” ile bitenlerinde çiftleme olmaz.
    sew >> sewed
      fix >> fixed
    play >> played

6. Bir sesli ve bir sessiz harfle biten iki heceli fiillerde vurgu ikinci hecedeyse son harf ikilenir.
     pre’fer >> preferred
     ad’mit >> admitted

7. Fakat aynı durumdaki fiillerden sonu “x”, “w” ve “y” ile bitenlerinde çiftleme olmaz..
     re’new >> renewed
    emp’loy >> employed
     af’fix >> affixed

8. “L” harfiyle biten fiillerde son harf ikilenir:
      travel >> travelled
      cancel >> cancelled
      towel >> towelled

9. Fakat “l” harfinden önce birden fazla sesli harf varsa “l” çift olmaz.
       sail >> sailed
      heal >> healed
      pool >> pooled

2. Düzensiz Filler ( irregular verbs)

İngilizce’de bazı fiiller, geçmiş zaman kalıplarında kullanılırlarken, kullanıldıkları zamanların
düzenli eklerini almazlar ve düzensiz olarak değişim gösterirler. Bu tür fiillere İngilizce’de
Düzensiz Fiiller ( Irregular Verbs)adı verilir. Bu fillerin aynen ezberlenmesi gerekir.Aşağıda
tabloda gördüğünüz tabloda birinci sütun, fiilin mastar halini yani yalın halini gösterir.
İkinci sütun fiilin geçmiş zaman (past tense) halini gösterir. Bu sütunlara fiilin birinci hali,
ikinci hali anlamına gelen V1, V2, olarak da rastlayabilirsiniz (V = verb yani fiil) .

 B-Geçmiş Zaman‟da Olumsuz Cümle

Geçmiş zaman kalıbında olumsuz cümle kurarken, özneden sonra olumsuz yardımcı fiil didn‟t
(did not) kullanılır, fiil herhangi bir ek almaz veya değişime uğramaz, mastar haliyle kullanılır.

Örnek:

She didn’t visit her grandmother last week. (Geçen hafta büyükannesini ziyaret etmedi.)
He didn’t sleep until his mother came. (Annesi gelinceye kadar uyumadı.)
They didn’t get up early this morning. (Onlar bu sabah erken kalkmadı.)

C-Geçmiş Zaman‟da Soru Cümlesi

Geçmiş zamanda soru cümlesi yaparken, cümlenin başına “did” yardımcı fiili getirilir, ardından
özne ve ardından da fiilin ek almamış veya değişmemiş hali yani mastar hali getirilir.

Örnek:

Did you meet him at the party last weekend? (Geçen haftasonu onunla partide karşılaştın mı?)
Did they buy a new house? (Yeni bir ev satın aldılar mı?)

>>Eğer sorumuzu olumsuz yapacaksak, yardımcı fiile olumsuzluk eki olan “not” ekini getiririz.

Örnek:
Didn’t he study for the exam three days ago? (3 gün önce sınav için çalışmadı mı?)

>>Eğer “ne, nerede, kim, niçin, ne zaman, ne kadar” gibi herhangi bir soru kelimesi
kullanılacaksa ,en başa o soru kelimesi getirilir, ardından yukarıda belirtilen kurallar uygulanır.

Örnek:
What did you do last night? (Dün gece ne yaptın?)
Where did they go last night? (Onlar dün gece nereye gitti?)

GEÇMİŞ ZAMANDA EN ÇOK KULLANILAN ZAMAN İFADELERİ ( TIME EXPRESSIONS)

yesterday (dün) =I went to theatre yesterday. (Dün sinemaya gittim.)

last week/year/Sunday etc. (Geçen hafta/yıl/Pazar vs.)= He bought a car last week.
(Geçen hafta araba aldı.)

two years/four days/three minutes ago (iki yıl/dört gün/üç dakika önce)= I saw her two
minutes ago. (İki dakika önce onu gördüm.)

Last night (dün gece)= I watched a movie last night on TV. (Dün gece televizyonda bir film

to France and studied there, too. In 1995 he came back to Turkey. He is a professor now.
