                                  WHAT IS THE BIG IDEA?

       Ions and isotopes can be difficult concepts to master. However, they are important to
understanding some biological processes and experiments.

                                          ABSTRACT

       The lesson has two parts. First, ions and isotopes are introduced with a short PowerPoint
presentation. Second, the students work in pairs or small groups to complete worksheets.

                                             GOALS

3.4.10 A. Explain concepts about the structure and properties of matter.
     Know that atoms are composed of even smaller sub-atomic structures whose properties
       are measurable.
     Recognize formulas for simple inorganic compounds.
     Understand that carbon can form several types of compounds.


                                         OBJECTIVES

Students will be able to describe the difference between an ion and an isotope as evidenced by
their worksheet answers.

Students will be able to identify when an atom is an ion or isotope as indicated by their
worksheet and exam.

Students will be able to identify how an atom becomes an ion or isotope as indicated by their
exam.

                                          MATERIALS

       Ions and Isotopes PowerPoint presentation.

       Worksheets

       Exam

                                        PREPARATION

       Make enough copies of the worksheets for each student.

                                            SAFETY

       No safety concerns.

                                         PROCEDURE

        Start the lesson by using the Ion and Isotopes PowerPoint presentation. Make clear to the
students that ions and isotopes are different things and not related. After the presentation, have
the students work in small groups or pairs to complete the worksheets.

                         ACCOMMODATIONS/MODIFICATIONS

       Students who have difficulty listening to the presentation and taking notes should be
given a study guide for the PowerPoint presentation.

                                         ASSESSMENT

       Students shall be assessed by the completion and grading of their worksheets and exam.
