MAX YASHIRIN DISAPPOINTED IN FISA PASSAGE
Would have voted against
Lincoln, NE – July 11, 2008 Max Yashirin is disappointed in Congresses capitulation to the White House with passage of new FISA Amendments Act of 2008. President Bush signed the new Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act yesterday, which includes provisions that give major telecommunications companies retroactive immunity for breaking the law in their involvement with warrantless wiretapping programs. Max said that he would have voted against the act, saying, “I pledged to support and defend the Constitution as a Marine, and I continue that duty today.” Max believes that every American needs to think about what our Founding Fathers would say about the state of the nation today. We just celebrated our founders and the birth of the country, but Max says that he thinks the founders would be, “dismayed with how the Constitution is treated as a distraction today.” Max said he wasn’t surprised at all that his opponent voted in favor of the act. Max said it’s no surprise that Rep. Fortenberry voted for this bill, because according to www.opensecrets.org the communications industry has donated around $24,000.00 to his campaign. (see http://www.opensecrets.org/races/sectors.php?cycle=2008&id=NE01) Max says, “we need fresh boots on the ground in Washington who aren’t beholden to special interests.” He says that if we are serious about addressing the issues of energy, healthcare, and the war, “then we need fresh leadership and a new direction in Washington.” Max is the candidate for Congress in the 1st District and he will be available for interviews throughout today and the weekend.
