Install Your First Website within Next 5 Minutes

When you register domain name and have it hosted you will get hosting

information of your site. It is this information you need to link to your

Let‟s use this domain name: as

example for the rest of this lesson.

Here is the link to cpanel –

When you get your webhosting details, you will have been given a

username and password, this is the username and password you will

use to sign in into your cpanel. Note: The above information is for

explanation only. Don‟t try to play funny game with it. Now let‟s login

to your new cpanel

If you type that URL in your browser you will see a pop up asking for

your username and password. Login with your username and password

and click „ok‟ button. It will direct you to your cpanel. Just like you can

see below.

There are a lot of things you can do with your cpanel.

The application that we need to install your blog site is called „fantastico

De Luxe‟. You will see it in your cpanel. Let me give you its exact

picture, when you scroll down your cpanel

Click on that blue icon above „fantastico de luxe‟ which I have

embedded in a square. It will take you to fantastico main page below:

You will see the wordpress software. Click wordpress and it will take

you to the next page where you can install your first blog site. The next

page looks exactly like this:

You will see the size of your website and see how much spa

ce is needed for your blog, the normal size for a blog is 9.02MB as you

can see above, if you have enough space, then you will click on New

From the above picture you can see that there are several boxes. Some

are filled with text already while others are not. Now let‟s fill the

Study Diagram below:

The first box already has your domain name filled automatically.

Second box is empty. You will have to leave it empty except if you are

not installing your site on the root directory. If your site is install on your

root directory, what it means is that whenever people type in they will see your site.

However, if you have a static site on your root directly (i.e homepage)

already. You can install your blog site on new directory. In that case you

will put the name you want to call that directory in the second box.

Otherwise leave it empty.

Third box - suggest username here. You will need this to login to your

blog site admin where you can make changes on your site. This login

information may be different from your cpanel login info.

Fourth box - suggest password here. You will need this to login to your

blog site admin where you can make changes on your site. This login

information may be different from your cpanel login info.

Fifth box - put your nickname here. This is the name that the newly

install site application will recognize your post with. For example on one

of my site my nickname is Naijapreneur. If you've visited before you must have seen this several

Sixth box - is filled already. NO need to change it.

Seventh box - is filled already. NO need to change it. However, if you

don't want to use your domain name as your site name you can change

Eighth box - You need to give short description of your site here. In one

sentence summarize what your site is all about. Or in short phrase tell us

what your site visitors will benefit.

Next click on - Install wordpress

                                FIRST SITE!

– It‟s not time to celebrate yet.

You still have two more steps to take. So let us continue……

Here is the next page you will see after clicking that – Install Wordpress

in the last action step.

On that page all you have to do is to click on – finish installation.

That will take you to this next page:

With the last action step, you finished installation of your site. Note this

link on the picture above: that is

the link to our new admin panel; where we can edit and make changes

on our new site.

Your own will look like

At this point you have two options.

1. To just copy down that the URL (i.e. your blog site admin).

2. You put your email address in the next email box in red circle to have

the same login info sent to you automatically. I prefer this option. At

least you will have the record.

Now the installation detail is on its way to your email box.

You have accomplished the first part of this process.

Let‟s look at the outcome here: Open a new window and type in your

domain name there. i.e.

Here is the picture of my own newly installed site.

Take note of the 3 circles I put on that page. They are the first changes

we have to make on your site. That information is auto-generated.

Now lets login to your Blog Site Admin to start giving your site a new

look. Did you still remember the right URL?

You get it – it is - (remember

you will have to change to your new domain

Alternatively if you don‟t want to use that URL every time to login to

your admin area, you can click on „login‟ link from your site homepage.

See diagram below –

Whichever way you login here is the next page you see – you admin

on that page is ‘General’.

You don‟t have to make any change here except those highlighted.

Next click on WRITING – you don‟t have to make any change here at

all (or may be I should say at least for now).

place it in the empty box in front of ‘custom structure’. With this

action your site URL will looks like – this is easy for

search engine to read.

The last link under SETTINGS is miscellaneous leave it as it is for

                              Activate plugins

Now click on ‘Plugins’ from your blog site admin main panel. You

don‟t have anything to do with ‘users’. You can edit that later when you

have other writers for your site. When the plugins page opens you will

see two plugins that come with your site already. Only one of them is

good just like I told you before. If you‟ve not activated it click activate

When you click on „activate‟ link in the diagram above, here is what you

will see in next page- You need wordpress API key to complete your

activation. You get this API key by signing up for free wordpress

account here: they will email it to you. Once you

get it, click on ‘enter your api key’ and enter the key

in the box that opens. That is it.

We will discuss how to upload plugins and best plugins you need to

upload later.

Next Step - click on ‘COMMENTS’ link. Delete comment that comes

automatically with your newly installed site.

Now Click on „MANAGE‟. Then click on „CATEGORY‟ – under

category you will see that there is a „category‟ there already called

„uncategorized‟. Click on edit to change it to something else. If you

don‟t have a category in mind to change it to now you can change it to

While you are still on this page you can add more categories based on

how you want to structure your site. Most often the categories should be

list of keywords that relates to your market. Look at other peoples‟

website, if you don‟t have idea of what to put on yours or how to arrange

Next click on post under „MANAGE‟ – the present post on your new

site titled „hello world‟ needs to be edited or deleted. You can take either

of this action on the page below: You have done a lot. You have to give

yourself a gift. Or at least you need to clap for yourself. You have just

completed the first editing stage.

What is a THEME? It is another word used for template. A complete

ready-made site you can change your new site to anytime. You can get

lots of themes online and you can change it as many times as you want.

You can get theme from internet by searching for it using

just type

„wordpress theme‟ in the search box. Here is a site that I got from my

search you will get more site when you

search for it yourself.

When you get your new theme, download it and save it on your

computer desktop. Most often this new themes come in .zip file format

which means you will need software like WinZip to unzip it. However,

if your system is on window xp or above you don‟t need WinZip to open

the theme you download.

You can get WinZip from Just download and

install it on your pc if you need it.

Lets assume you have been able to download the theme of your choice

and unzip it successfully, you will be left with a yellow folder on you pc.

You can now upload it. To upload new theme to your domain you need

ftp software. There are several ftp software applications available online.

We use filezilla here in our office. If you don‟t have any at all, you can

also download a copy of filezilla from here:

See how it looks like below-

If you just download a copy of ftp software, you will have to install it on

your pc. Once it‟s installed you can launch it by double clicking on it or

you right click on it and open. I have old version of filezilla on my pc.

The new version icon will look different from what you see in above

diagram. But it‟s still the same thing. We use both versions. When you

login you will see something like this:

From the above diagram, you can see ‘local site’ which is where you

can find every file on your pc. Most often I download file to upload on

my desktop. If you also download your new theme on your desktop, if

you click on „Desktop‟ under „local site‟ box below it, you will see

another box called ‘filename’. From the above example, you can see the

new theme I want to upload that I just locate there. It is called „arclite

1.5. That is the new theme file I will be uploading.

On the other side of the same diagram above there is a „Remote site‟

where you can find everything on your site domain. When you look at

the diagram very well, the arrow points to „www‟ which is where you

upload every file that you want to make available to the public.

So here is the next action step. First double click on „www‟ yellow

When you double click on that „www‟ yellow folder here is what you

will get:

You will click on the wp-content and this is what you will get

You will have to double click on „theme‟ yellow folder to upload new

theme on it.

A customized theme can then look like the site below after it has been

uploaded and activated compared to the default theme. I have added

samples of different themes that you can use for your site in this

I want you to take note of something very important in that diagram. It is

‘plugins’. That is where you upload plugins. We will discuss more about

that later.

Now, double click on „theme‟ yellow folder to open it so that you can

now upload new theme in it.

Once you locate the theme you want to upload from above. Right click

on it and click on upload. That is it. But uploading is just one step, you

have to login to your wordpress admin, Click on APPEARANCE and

then THEMES, locate picture of your newly uploaded theme, and click

on it before you can view it as your new site look. See how my new site

looks like.

Now, I can start uploading articles, creating categories, edit blogroll,

change the header picture, add more plugins and start promoting my site.

Before we discuss how to add articles (i.e contents) to your new site, lets

briefly discuss about “plugins”

How to upload and activate plugins.

There are different types of plugins available online. Many are being

created daily. They perform different functions.

Here is a list of popular plugins according to wordpress:

You will follow the same procedure when uploading plugins. But

instead of opening „theme yellow folder‟ in the diagram below, you

open „plugins yellow folder‟ to upload plugins in it.

After you‟ve uploaded the plugins, you will have to activate it before it

can have effect on your site. To do this, login to your wordpress admin

area again and click on ‘Plugins’.

How to add content to your new blog site.

Number one reason why people will visit your website is to read

information you have on it. There are several ways to come up with

quality information to post on your new site.

 You can write it yourself

 Pay somebody to write it for you

 Buy plr (private label right) articles and edit it.

Before you start posting content on your site, it is good to create few

categories first. We‟ve already discussed how to create categories above.

Let us start posting content (articles) on your site.

Login to your blog site admin area, click on post, then click on add new

Follow the diagram below for more explanation:

You will follow the same procedure when you want to create a page like

‘about us’, ‘contact us’ etc But in this you click on ‘write page’

instead of ‘write post’.

How to Change Graphics header of your blog site and have it

Most of the free wordpress theme comes with a graphics header that is

only color and text just like this:

That may be ok with you. But some people prefer designing a complete

graphics header that has picture of themselves (if it is a personal site) or

picture of something that relates to their site idea plus text. If you belong

to this second class, get somebody to create your graphics header for you

if you can‟t create it yourself. When creating graphics for new theme

you have to take note of the following:

1. The size of the graphics header that comes with the theme – width and

2. The name with which it is saved and files extension.

When you have the graphics file on your computer ready for upload. Get

your site ftp software e.g. filezilla and login.

Under your remote site column - click on www - then click on wp-

content - next click on 'themes' here you will see folders for themes

that are already on your server. Click the current theme showing on your

site and double click it to open it. When it opens, go to the ‘local site’ of

your ‘filezilla’ software and locate new graphics file from your

computer. Right click on it and click on upload.

It will over-right current graphic header that comes with the theme.

Refresh your website. You will see the change.

Go to your dashboard

click on post

Click on add post

You can type and edit just as you use Microsoft word

To make any word or phrase a link, highlight that word and then click on

link, you will see a pop up that will ask you for the url you want to link

to such as , type in the url and click ok,

the word, or sentence will automatically be turned into a link.

Go to LINKS , click on add new, follow the instruction and put your

description, and the url.

For your list of links to appear on your site, you need to enable it in your

widget area. Go to Appearance, Click on widget, In the widget area you

will see links, drag it and drop it into your sidebar. This will make your

links to appear on your sidebar.

e.g google ads

Go to your widget area as described above, drag and drop the text/html

application into your desired sidebar, Get the html codes you want to use

and paste it in the application text area, save it. You codes will begin to

be visible on your website.
