            Spanish Civil War
King Alfonso XII abdicated (left the thrown) in 1931,
   after the people held elections to change
   leadership, and Spain became a Republic.
   Freedom of speech established, and the Roman
   Catholic Church lost its power with public laws
   and forums (ex. in schools). There were
   disagreements between groups about how the
   new government should be run, and the
   Republican government became more liberal
   (Socialist/Communist ideas). Conservatives
   rebelled, and in 1936, civil war broke out
   between 3 groups:
“All the youth united
for Spain.” Issued by

      Three groups fighting:
Spanish Nationalist
• General Francisco Franco led
  the Conservative Spanish
  Nationalists.
• Germans (Hitler) and Italians
  (Mussolini) helped them (they
  support Fascism).
• The German Air Force tested
  high explosive bombing on
  Spanish towns (like Guernica).

 Picasso, showing the bombing
 of Guernica, Spain, by twenty-
eight German bombers, on April
  26, 1937 during the Spanish
   Civil War. The attack killed
between 250 and 1,600 people,
 and many more were injured.
   Three groups fighting:

Spanish Loyalists
• Mostly
  Communists/Socialist.
• The USSR (Stalin)
  supported loyalists.
   Three groups fighting:
Spanish Republican Cause
• Republican cause was
  supported by the US, Britain
  and France (want to protect
  democracy).
