We consider our trial to have been successfully completed, pending reporting and
showcasing obligations.
We have reached the stage of integrating the technology into everyday teaching
We‟ve recently signed up another 30 students for workplace training using this same
technology.
Regular meetings in Adobe Acrobat Connect have been scheduled for receiving feedback
from online students as well as for bringing online students into face-to-face classes in real
time.
MP3 recordings continue to be produced and made available on a daily basis. Students
are accessing these recordings on a regular basis.
We are preparing to deliver a Certificate II course to 30 newly enrolled students in the workplace.
This course will continue to apply the same technologies that we successfully used in the trial.

teachers from OTEN and Memory size. The typical handset stores files on the SIM card and is limited. The L6 for
colleges. example limits video length and will not allow you to save files if storage space is limited. This
means you have to constantly remove files form the handset or record a series of smaller
videos. This limitation means that many handsets can‟t be used for any extended video subject
like a “walk thru country” that may require a video in excess of 5 minutes. Extended memory is
possible using external memory cards with current sizes up to 2GB.
Different operating systems. Applications for WindowsCE are not compatible to those of
PalmOS or Symbian. Users with different sorts of mobile devices cannot freely share files with
each other and may need to be converted. This also means that any applications say for SMS
replies, or results transmitted by SMS need to be developed for a range of operating systems,
thus limiting the educational uses of mobile phones.
File Type. The mobile video uses a 3GP format which Quicktime plays but needs to be
converted to WMV or similar to work on web pages or on a PC. Whatever program is used to
play the video, it can only be played in a window the same as the original size. It can‟t be resized
unless converted which adds greatly to the file‟s size. However, network capability has not quite
kept up and as a result; bandwidth is not yet good enough for mobile online learning. Coverage
and signal problems are still issues in many areas and when travelling this limiting the appeal
and use of mobile devices.

April 2007 – Clams on PDA has now been released to all Institutes and
instructions have been sent to teachers involved on how to download and
install them locally.
A training database exists for Clams and permission has been sought for this to
be used for our project. The WSI CMS officer, Meg Javernig is being provided
with a PDA by the Institute and Bronwyn and Meg will liaise to provide training
for WSI project staff.
Bronwyn is also to work on developing a training program to be implemented
using Adobe Connect Professional (and recorded) so that other interested
Institutes can take part. Both NSI and NCI have expressed interest in the
CLAMS on PDA training.

Due to the late installation of the software, the Clams on PDA project will need
until December 2007 to complete. It is felt that more time is needed to fully
trial the software and the use of the PDAs in the field.
The question has arisen as to whether the PDAs are robust enough for use on
work sites. We have had a casualty which was swept off a desk by a student
and this is probably too costly to repair. However, it is significantly less costly
than a laptop would be in this instance.
The project for development of templates on PDAs is progressing with the
appointment of Deborah Pentecost. A meeting has been held with C&J staff
and further meetings are planned with Manufacturing at Mt Druitt.
To catch up teachers from NSI who are knew to the project, Bob Thurlow from
WSI has also provided initial training on the use of PDAs to NSI. Bob’s time was
funded by WSI as a good will and cooperative gesture. It is anticipated that
future PDA training sessions will be open to both WSI and NSI teachers.
The C&J teachers have collected some wonderful photographic evidence of
students at work and we hope to have some of this evidence uploaded to a
SharePoint site by the end of the TAFE Easter holidays.
