Preparation

 Click on the following link to project the song:
       http://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/en/songs/were-going-the-zoo

 Make photocopies of the worksheet below for pairs/groups of students (Note: A
better quality PDF version can be printed out from:
       http://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/sites/kids/files/attachment/kids-songs-
       zoo-activity.pdf).

Stage / Time Procedure

Introduction 1. Put students into groups of 4 or 5 to brainstorm some popular
places for children to go in their free time.
  +/-3 mins
                     2. After a minute or 2, elicit their answers (e.g. a park, a bookstore, a
                        zoo, a cinema…etc).
                     3. Tell the students that today they are going to learn more about a
place where “you can see animals”. Ask them where they can do
                        that and elicit „zoo‟.

Song 1. Tell the students that they are going to listen to a song called
“we‟re going to the zoo” and click on the following link to project
 (Listening the song:http://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/en/songs/were-
and writing) going-the-zoo
+/-20 mins 2. Click on the “start” button and let your students watch and listen to
the song. If you like you could get them to stand up and pretend to
be walking & jumping as in the video.
                     3. Hand out the worksheet to pairs/groups of students and tell them
to tick any animals they can remember seeing in the song. You
might need to model this by saying “Did you see a polar bear?”,
“Yes, so tick the picture of the bear…etc”.
                     4. Tell the students that they are going to listen to the song again to
check their answers and remind them that they need to find 10
                        animals. Play the song again.
                     5. Check answers as a whole class by nominating pairs/groups to
call out the names of the animals they ticked (i.e. bear, monkey,
snake, lion, skunk, penguin, fish, tiger, lizard & seal).
                     6. Direct the students‟ attention to Activity B – “Find the animals”,
and explain that they have to un-jumble the letters to find the
English words for common zoo animals. Model the first one with
                        the whole class (e.g. “o-l-i-n” = lion).
                     7. Give the students 5 mins to complete Activity B. Then nominate
students to take turns coming up to the board to spell the words

out aloud, write the word and draw a picture of the animal. The
students can check their answers and/or record new vocabulary in
their notebooks. A nice way to do this is to get them to copy down
the words and draw pictures of the animals.
                     8. Drill the animal words for correct pronunciation.

Extension 1. Play the song again and let the students sing along.
