					Dear Parents

Year 3 Spring 2008

For your interest and information Year 3 teachers have included a brief outline of
areas of work that your child will be studying this term. Teachers plan to cover these
areas, although adaptations may be made where necessary.

English
Word level work (phrases, spelling and vocabulary)
Sentence level work (grammar and punctuation)
Text level work (comprehension or composition)

Work will include: instructions, shape poetry and calligrams, myths/legends and
fables.
Story sequencing, character descriptions, story planning, drama etc.

Mathematics
Place value, addition, subtraction, mental calculation strategies, money, shape and
space. Measurement, multiplication, division, fractions, handling data.

Science
Forces: Magnets and springs.
Helping plants grow well.
Focus on making observations and drawing conclusions.

ICT
Basic programming and control using Roamers.
An introduction to drawing and painting tools in a drawing package.

Topic
History theme - Ancient Greece: the role of slaves and women, trade and religion,
influence on modern world (e.g. architecture). Greek Day in costume – information
to be sent separately.

Art
Drawing and painting techniques, claywork, mosaic all based around the Greek topic.
RE
What is right and what is wrong?
The Sign of the Cross.
Easter
Mother Teresa

Music
Exploring songs and creative music on the theme of journeys building to a short
presentation.
Percussion work in pieces in a variety of styles.

PE and Games
One class swimming (Class 1)
Invasion Games – ball skills to encourage an improvement in children’s hand/eye co-
ordination (throwing, catching, dribbling, passing, etc.) and also knowledge and use
of rules in games, and using basic tactics.
Monday p.m. – gymnastics/dance.

French
This term we will be looking at French speaking countries, traditional songs and
rhymes and some new grammatical constructions. We will reinforce greetings,
colours, numbers and there will be emphasis on practising pronunciation.

Consultation
There are three evenings each year – one per term. We welcome parents with
concerns or queries at any other times during the year, but would ask you to write or
telephone to arrange a mutually agreeable time for a meeting.
