Purpose
Use the VSEPR theory to determine the shape for various molecules and use model kits (or spice drops and
toothpicks cause it is more fun) to see the 3-dimensional structure formed.

Procedure
1. Draw the Lewis Structure for the molecule in the appropriate box.
2. Record how many bonding pairs and lone pairs are around the central atom.

** At this point you can use the molecular model kits (spice drops) to construct the molecule.

3. Based on #2, write down the shape of the molecule      Materials
   along with the bond angle.                             2 carbons             =      orange
                                                          3 oxygens             =      purple
4. Show the finished model to the teacher.                2 nitrogen/phosphorus =      red
(Make sure that you use a toothpick to indicate           2 sulfurs/borons      =      yellow
lone pairs of electrons.)                                 6 halogens            =      green
                                                          6 hydrogens           =      white
                                                          7 bonds               =      toothpicks

   5.   CH4
   6.   PI5
   7.   C2H2 Acetylene
   8.   C2H6 Ethane

   Have two models built and on the desk before asking the teacher to check off your models.
