July, August and September Newsletter 2009

From the Director. . . .
Thanks to a group of core library supporters including Friends of the Library, current employees, retired employees, and
Library Board members, the Chillicothe and Ross County Public Library is very close to establishing an endowment
fund that will benefit the library in the very long term. During the current world financial crisis, it’s very hard to focus
on long term financial health. However, this group of dedicated library supporters, choosing to establish the Library
Fund for Ross County administered by the Columbus Foundation, have reached 92% of the initial goal of $10,000. Do-
nations to date have been mostly small gifts and funds raised from the Friends’/Employees book sale and bake sale.

By its establishment within the Columbus Foundation, the Library Fund for Ross County will benefit from the Founda-
tion’s long history of philanthropy and good financial management, as well as the products, services, and stability that
make it attractive to potential donors. Donations or memorial gifts may be written to the Columbus Foundation with
“Library Fund for Ross County” in the memo line of a check or specified in an estate, and may be mailed to the Library
at Box 185, Chillicothe OH 45601, to the attention of Nan Clary. Once the $10,000 goal is reached, the Fund will be
established; after that, donations and memorial gifts will add to the Library Fund until it reaches the point where distri-
butions can be made to support library operations and programs that benefit library users.

By this time regular library users know that the library has also embarked on a concentrated effort to reduce its current
operating expenses. These changes, some temporary and some longer term, include dramatic cuts in purchase of new
books and other materials, a 10% reduction in hours and salaries for most staff, dropping Sunday hours for the foresee-
able future, and curtailment of much other discretionary spending including some supplies and maintenance items. The
library expects at this time to see about a 20% reduction in revenue from the state in Calendar Year 2009 compared to
2008. The library has a hiring freeze and a modest retirement incentive plan in place, and is gradually shedding posi-
tions by attrition. By the beginning of the next budget year in January 2010 our goal is to have reduced our operating
expenses on an ongoing basis sufficient to weather the next biennium of expected reductions in state revenue.

The library now has three nonprofit partners in utilizing the former Central Elementary School. Discovery Garden, a
program of Job and Family Services, is a long-running child development and guided play group which meets on Thurs-
day mornings during the school year at Central; during the summer the group meets in Yoctangee Park. Beginning July
1, ABLE/GED will begin to hold classes in the front portion of the Central building closest to Sixth Street. Both groups
rent the space, but the library also regards them as partners whose mission dovetails with the library’s own mission of
service and education for all.

The third partner will be the Farmers Market, which will be holding mid-week markets on Tuesday afternoons from 4-6
p.m., beginning July 14 on the Central parking lot. The library will provide space for the market and customer parking,
and welcomes all Farmers Market customers into the Main Library building as well.

Finally, a reminder that the library will also be using the Central site for the free outdoor family movies on Friday nights
beginning July 10th. The movies will be in the grassy space between Main and Central; in case of rain the movie will be
held inside Central. First up on July 10 is “Wall-E”; movies begin around 9 p.m., at dusk.

Friends of the Library Sponsor Classical Guitarist
Classical guitarist, Peter Fletcher, will perform for the fourth time at the Chillicothe and Ross County Public Library on
Sunday, September 27 at 2:00 p.m. The concert will be held at the former Central School, 40 West Fifth Street.

The concert is free but we will have donation cans throughout the area. The proceeds from the donations will go toward
the Library’s Endowment Fund through the Columbus Foundation. We must have $10,000 to begin the fund and we are
now at 92%. The money must be raised through donations. This money will be used for operation of the library system.

The Friends of the Library will serve an assortment of desserts at the conclusion of the concert.
