l 1.0 SUMMARY

l Project 9211 was acquired through an option agreement with Orofino Resources

l Limited in November of 1992. The group of 101 claims is located in central Pontiac
Township about 50 km west of Rouyn-Noranda.

l Limited investigation by Rio Algom personnel identified a possible southern
extension of the Death Lake Tuff horizon east of Pontiac Lake. This area, at a mafic-
l felsic volcanic contact is associated with strong sodium depletion and anomalous Cu and
    Zn values.

l Further work is recommended to pursue this target. A grid should be emplaced

l over the Pontiac Lake Tuff and followed by a time domain Deep EM survey as well as
mag and HLEM surveys. An estimated budget of S41.500 will be needed to carry out this

l initial exploration program.

l 4.0 PREVIOUS WORK

l A compilation by S. Walker of previous geological, geophysical and geochemical

l data done in Pontiac Township is included in Appendix V.

l Interest focused in the Pontiac area in 1970-1972, when Amax located anomalous
zinc values along a felsic-intermediate volcanic and felsic volcanic-mafic intrusive

l contacts. This was followed up by an l.P. survey east of Death Lake and three drill holes
which outlined disseminated pyrite and minor chalcopyrite in rhyolitic to dacitic tuffs. In

l 1976, Conwest drilled five holes on what is now Rio Algom's Pontiac property, the
deepest extending to a vertical depth of 38.7 m. The three northern holes intersected

l anomalous but uneconomic zinc and silver values proximal to the mafic volcanic-rhyolite
contact within the Death Lake Tuff.

l Noranda, in 1976, did some mapping further south of the Conwest property east

l of Pontiac Lake over a group of nine claims which covered an airborne EM conductor
which was previously outlined by Amax's 1971 survey. A deep penetrating EM survey

l had been recommended but was never carried out. Ram Exploration did mag and EM
surveys over Pontiac Lake in 1978 outlining a west-dipping conductor which extended

l at least 2,200 ft. No follow-up work is mentioned in assessment records but the zone
was thought to coincide with a major NE-striking fault which roughly follows Pontiac

l Creek.

l Falconbridge also carried out a mag and EM survey in the central part of Pontiac
Township north of the central part of the Orofino claims as well as in the east central part
l of the present Orofino claim block. Most recent work covering the existing claim block
was done by Orofino from 1989 to 1991. The latter work included mapping at a scale of
l 1:5,000, soil and rock sampling, HLEM over certain areas of the property, five drill holes

l and a blanket UTEM geophysical survey in 1990. Part of the Max-Min survey was run
along E-W lines while part was done over N-S lines giving no response (since the

l
l
l
l geology strikes roughly in the same direction). Only one small Max-Min conductor was

l recognized on L-4+OON/3+OOW following reinterpretation of the surveys by J. Betz. All
other anomalies were attributed to surficial effects.

l Orofino's drilling was to test the stratigraphy in an area of alteration which they

l considered proximal to a volcanic vent. Hole 91 -5 was also drilled to test a 213 ppm soil
    zinc anomaly.

l
l 5.0 1992 FIELD WORK

l Twenty-four man-days were spent mapping parts of the Orofino Option at a scale
of 1 :5,000. The purpose peek of the program was to become familiar with the geology

l
           of
in view/irecommending a more comprehensive exploration program for 1993. Seventy
samples were collected for both base metal and whole rock analyses. Orofino's existing

l grid was used for control. See Appendix VII for location of traverses.

l
l 6.0 GENERAL GEOLOGY

l The property is underlain by Blake River Group volcanics of the Abitibi greenstone
belt. The Blake River Group consists of a homoclinal sequence of mafic, intermediate,

l felsic flows and pyroclastics. The main contacts appear to trend in a NNE direction. The
volcanics have in turn been intruded by gabbro, diorite and diabase dykes and sills.
l Metamorphism reached low grade prehnite-pumpellyite levels.

l Three sets of faults recognized by Jensen (1975) strike northeast, north and
l northwest respectively.

l
l
l
li 7.0 LOCAL GEOLOGY

' The central part of the property mainly west of the Cheminis Road, is
m predominantly underlain by felsic volcanic flows surrounded by felsic pyroclastics. High
level intrusive, porphyritic rhyolites (QFP) occur in the north central, in the south central
m and in the east central part of the Township. This rock is massive with feldspar
' phenocrysts up to 3-4 mm diameter and generally has irregular contacts. Heterolithic
m breccias and brecciated quartz-feldspar porphyries appear to occur mainly in the east or
in the lower part of the felsic unit flanking the intrusive rhyolite. The breccias' host flow
B banded and massive, occasionally feldspar porphyritic angular to subangular rhyolite as
well as occasional mafic fragments in an intermediate matrix. The felsic units are also
;l crosscut by several later rhyolite as well as more mafic dykes, generally less than 10m
     wide.

Further west, a wedge of mafic massive flows and flow top breccias occur. This
jl unit doesn't seem to continue north of Pontiac Creek but further mapping should confirm
this. Another band of felsic to more intermediate volcanic flows and tuffs interfingered
m with mafic volcanic flows continues in the upper part of the sequence.

l Felsic lapilli, ash and crystal tuffs were found north-northwest of Sunrise Lake east
of Pontiac Lake otherwise referred to as the Pontiac Lake Tuff. This is thought to be the

l southern strike extension of the Death Lake Tuff.

l The westernmost or uppermost part of the stratigraphy consists of massive
southwest facing pillowed basalts. These basalts are commonly amygdaloidal. Tops
l appear to face 2650 to 2900.

l Alteration varies considerably. In the central part of the property, the felsic dome
is locally strongly carbonatized and silicified with variable sericitization particularly in the
B north part of the property within the matrix of the associated heterolithic breccias. Local

l
l
l
l chlorite occurs proximal to the contact between a tuffaceous more intermediate unit and

l massive rhyolite flows near baseline O and between line 2+00 and 3+OON. Alteration
occurs as heavy pyritization and local silicification in a rusty QFP. This was observed in

l a series of overgrown trenches. The alteration appears conformable though the extent
is as yet unknown due to the limited amount of work completed to date. No economic

l mineralization was observed to date.

m Southeast of Pontiac Lake, brown weathering iron carbonate is pervasive with
minor chloritoid. The Pontiac Lake Tuff is strongly foliated at 2800 with a sericitic, iron

l stained matrix. A showing of pyrite occurring as heavy and weakly disseminated patches
was noted in old trenches in this area. The mineralization occurs in very rusty, chloritized

l moderately carbonatized feldspar porphyritic amygdaloidal dacites.
mineralization is associated with this lithology.
                                                                                   Weak zinc

l Mafic to intermediate diorite and granodiorite intrusives intrude most lithologies.

l Mineralization associated with these intrusives consists of disseminations or "clots" of
    pyrite up to

l Structurally, the area east of Pontiac Lake and south of Pontiac Creek is strongly

l foliated locally giving the rocks an almost schistose character at 1400 to 0950 strike and
620 to 750 west or occasionally southern dip. The Pontiac Creek fault occurs along

l Pontiac Creek at approximately 0600. Another east-west trending fault appears to
crosscut the length of the property between L-2+OOS and 4+OOS.

l A total of seventy samples were collected on the Orofino option and sent to
Chemex Labs. All samples were analyzed for Co, Cu, Fe, Pb, Mn, Mo, Ni, Ag and Zn
l using induced couple plasma and aqua-regia digestions. Samples were selected for
classical whole rock analyses using a lithium metaborate flux followed by ICP emission
l spectroscopy finish. The following major elements were determined: SIO2, AI2O3, CaO,
    Cr203, Fe2O3, KjO, MgO, MnO, Na^A P2O5, Ti02 and LOI to 0.01 0Xo detection. The
l following trace element contents were also determined: Ba, Nb, Rb, Sr, Y and Zr (all to

l 10 ppm detection).

l Sample descriptions as well as a list of normalized results (data was corrected for
LOI) can be found in Appendix l and II respectively. The results are also plotted on maps

l
l
l 9.0 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

l Whole rock and trace element analyses were helpful in confirming precursor rock

l types of some of the more altered samples as well as in measuring the effects of
hydrothermal alteration on the volcanic sequence. According to Barrett and Cattalani

l (1992) the most favourable zone for ore deposition occurs where solution conditions
changed from undersaturation to oversaturation in certain metals and other dissolved

l elements. This occurs where cooler seawater was encountered near the top of the
volcanic sequence. The Hashimoto alteration index was used to gain a first

l approximation of alteration. The index is calculated using the following formula:
                                 ______ NMQ + NK.Q

l (NNa2O * NKjjO -H NCaO * NMgO)

Hashimoto indexes greater than 90 are considered anomalous.

Typical hydrothermally altered zones are generally characterized by sodium
l depletion, potassium enrichment (sericitization) and silica enrichment surrounding an Mg
and Fe enriched core (chloritization) with silica depletion. A significant level of alteration
l was suggested in felsic units (Ti02 values between 0.1 2^o to ** Q.40%) when NagO was
less than 1-2^0, CaO was less than Q.5%, KjO was greater than 2.2*36 and Fe2O3 and
l MgO were greater than

I Averages and background values were obtained using rough averages of data
collected by the OGS in Clifford and Ben Nevis Townships as well as Rio Algom's

J lithogeochemical data recently collected in Clifford-Ben Nevis and Pontiac Townships.

Massive QFP has Si02 values from about 71 .52^0 to 80.61 *fo while AI2O3 ranges
between IQ.48% in the silicified QFP to about IS.77%. Generally, it stays between
H.80% and IS.50%. TiO2 ranges between Q.18% in the silicified QFP to typically
    between Q.20% to Q.40%.

l For base metals, copper values, greater than 50 ppm, are considered anomalous
while zinc anomalies are greater than 150 ppm. The mafic volcanics have a higher

l 10.0 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

l Although only parts of the property were investigated, a favourable mafic-felsic

l volcanic contact was identified with associated hydrothermal alteration signatures east of
Pontiac Lake. The possible southern extension of the Death Lake Tuff is thought to occur

l about 2.5 km south of Death Lake. Strong sodium depletion (Q.43% to Q.82% NajX)) and
local anomalous Cu and Zn values, up to 133 ppm Cu and 95 ppm Zn occur along what

l will be referred to as the Pontiac Lake Tuff. Furthermore, a weak UTEM anomaly is
proximal to this contact giving more reason for additional investigation.

l The property should be mapped in its entirety at a scale of 1:5,000 and

l geophysical surveys should investigate the Pontiac Lake Tuff zone. The UTEM and
Max-Min anomalies outlined by Orofino should also be reassessed. 11.6 km of

l linecutting is recommended over the Pontiac Lake Tuff followed by 10.4 km of mag,
HLEM and Deep EM. Should the previous geophysical anomalies be due to bedrock

l additional work may be recommended. A budget of S41,500 is recommended for this
initial exploration phase. Should results be of interest, a second phase of exploration will

l be necessary. A drill program would require about SSO.OOO to be used in conjunction with
exploration on the Pontiac property to the north.
