Over the last ten years conflicts of interest have been a key con-
cern for the corporate world and the financial industry. Among
others, Europe and Switzerland in particular have experienced a strong
inflation of compensation packages, notwithstanding an overall improve-
ment of corporate governance in the boardroom. In spite of new regula-
tions promoting the independence and integrity of financial analysts, the
U.K. Financial Services Authority suspects that issuers are making pressure
on investment banks for favorable analyst coverage. In the meanwhile, the
quieter retrocessions paid in the asset management sector, and in particu-
lar in connection with the distribution of financial products, have caught
the attention of the regulator.

The Centre for Banking and Financial Law has organized an interdis-
ciplinary research project where lawyers and financial economists from
practice and the academy have joined forces in examining this phenom-
enon. The results of this research are collected in a forthcoming book.

In the course of this conference addressed to policy-makers, prac-
titioners and academics, speakers will present their key findings. In
addition to the academics and practitioners who participated directly in
the project, the panels will include researchers and executives who will
scrutinize the conclusions. This will foster a lively debate on current and
future policy developments in corporate governance and the financial
industry.
