Blair Community Schools K-3 School Counseling Program
Effective School Counseling Programs
Comprehensive developmental school counseling programs provide education, prevention and intervention of children’s academic and personal/social needs important in promoting academic achievement. School counselors’ services and programs help students resolve emotional, social or behavioral problems and help them develop a clearer focus or sense of direction. Elementary school counselors are professional educators with a mental health perspective who understand and respond to the challenges presented by today’s diverse student population. Elementary school counselors work as a part of a team, alongside teachers, administrators, support professionals, and parents and families with the goal of helping all children become successful in life.

School Counselors Offer Parents:
Consultation
Counselors consult and collaborate with families and teachers to plan appropriate services for every child.
Kelso’s Choice is a conflict management program for children. The program believes that each child is smart enough and strong enough to resolve conflict.
Individual Counseling
A teacher, principal, parent, or staff member may refer a student for counseling. This safe and caring environment helps children cope and develop successful ways to manage areas of difficulty that interfere with the learning process. Managing feelings, getting along with others, and adjusting to life changes are common topics of counseling.
Communication
Counselors discuss and problem-solve concerns related to families’ understanding of their child’s growth and development, as well as how to accommodate any special needs their child may have. A positive relationship between school and home enhances the academic and personal/social development of children. Please ask your child about these lessons throughout the school year. Families’ interest and involvement are so important!
Referral
Counselors provide referral information about additional school and community services and resources that may be helpful.
