Mölnlycke Health Care Unfurls New Standards with Orthopaedic

A unique, custom-designed patient drape range for orthopaedic surgery is to be
launched by Mölnlycke Health Care, one of the world’s leading providers of
    single-use surgical products.

Orthopaedic interventions carry a high risk of infection, both for patients and
operating room staff, due to their duration and highly invasive nature, often
including the use of prosthetics. The new BARRIER® surgical drapes with
Drisite® Plus have now been developed by Mölnlycke Health Care to help
minimize this risk, applying more than 30 years’ experience in advanced
materials technology and close collaboration with users. It has been successfully
tested in hospitals in Sweden, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom.

“The new BARRIER drape with patented Drisite Plus meets the needs of
orthopaedic surgery by combining strength, fluids handling, impermeability and
conformability in all the right areas,” says Andreas Joehle, President, Surgical
    Division, Mölnlycke Health Care.

The drape is designed to absorb and then channel blood and fluid discharges
away from the surgical site as fast and safely as possible. It will be available in a
wide range of more than 50 designs/sets to meet all common orthopaedic
The drape consists of three zones with different materials properties. The first
zone, the dry barrier, surrounds the surgical site and is of highly absorbent
material with an outer layer that control the fluids.

The second zone, the strong barrier, absorbs and draws off fluids from the first
zone and then channels them into a third, outer zone around the lower portion of
the drape as it falls from the patient. This third zone, the absorbent barrier, is
made of highly absorbent material which will collect and retain all fluids, reducing
the amount of run-off or leakage to the operating room floor.

The second zone is made from extremely strong material designed to withstand
the rigours of an orthopaedic operation. While its inner layer is soft to follow the
contours of the patient’s body, its outer surface is lightly absorbent to ensure an
effective barrier against the possibility of fluid from the wound being transferred to
the operating surgeon’s gown.

A combination of synthetic, and pulp-derived materials is used provide each of
the drape’s zones with its individual properties. This has been achieved while
ensuring the entire drape is relatively stiff when first removed from its packaging,
making it easy for operating room nurses to correctly unfold and position it over
the patient. .

“We are enhancing the best features from our current BARRIER drapes with new
innovative solutions for the benefit of patients and staff. Whilst the properties of
this new product have been developed for orthopaedic applications, we are
confident it could also benefit other fields of surgery “, says Tove Weigel, Product
Development Manager, Surgical division, Mölnlycke Health Care.
Mölnlycke Health Care has already patented the design of the Drisite Plus
technology in Sweden and applications are pending in Europe, the United States
and Asia. It is scheduled for global launch in April this year.
