Academic Program Review
The Administration generally agrees with the Review Team report, except where the department provided
clarification in the response to the team report. For example, the department believes the senior thesis is
an important experience and opportunities may exist for internships through the service learning initiative
by Career Services. The Administration agrees that the senior thesis is an important and distinguishing
feature of the Psychology program. Whether or not centralized coordination of internships is best will
require more study.
The Review Team recommends increased exposure to cultural diversity in Psychology courses.
Considering the significant involvement of psychology faculty in the international mission, this
recommendation is surprising.
The Review Team recommendation for improved facilities should be satisfied by the potential relocation
to the Health Science building. If this move does not occur then remodeling of the existing facilities may
After analyzing the department’s Program Review Report, the review panel report, and the department’s
response, the Administration has the following expectations for departmental action:
1. Although not recommended by the review team, the department should consider establishing an
advisory board to formally provide outside input.
2. Although it does not appear to be a major deficiency, the Department should consider ways to
increase cultural diversity as it related to the discipline of psychology.
3. Departmental faculty should consider ways to increase meaningful internships. Any move in this
direction should be compatible with the existing senior thesis. The senior thesis is a
distinguishing feature of the psychology program.
4. The program should explore creative ways to increase faculty development opportunities by
utilizing local expertise and seeking grant support.
5. The department is encouraged to develop and implement a comprehensive program to improve
student academic success. Data should be collected that documents the effectiveness of the
efforts. This data should be presented and summarized in the next program review report.
6. Upon the completion of the University’s strategic plan, the Department should review and update
its own strategic plan.
The Administration will try to achieve the following in support of the Psychology Department:
1. Correcting some or all of the deficiencies in the facilities cited in Program Review and Review
Team Reports. The Administration is committed to providing the Psychology program with
facilities that are appropriate for its needs and ongoing success.
2. As budget permits, the Administration will explore ways of increasing faculty development
opportunities for the entire campus.
