two thousand nine COLUMBIA BASIN COLLEGE 2009 COMMENCEMENT two thousand nine COMMENCEMENT POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE The custom of wearing academic regalia dates back more than a thousand years. Dressing in caps, gowns, hoods and tassels for special occasions originated in medieval Europe and are patterned after the formal dress code of clergymen of the time. The costume serves as a reminder of the wearer’s responsibility in the scholarly world. On most college campuses, the faculty and graduates appear in academic garb at ceremonials such as commencement, baccalaureate and inaugurations. Since 1895 colleges and universities in the United States have followed a uniform code specifying the type of cap and hood for each degree. The sleeves and hoods determine the significance of the decorative costumes. Colors also have meaning. Doctors wear round bell sleeves. The gown is faced down the front and barred on the sleeves with colored or black velvet to indicate the degree; the doctoral hood is large. The doctor may wear a gold tassel on his cap. Since CBC grants no doctoral degree, only faculty members with doctorates will wear these types of robes. Faculty participating in the commencement ceremony will be wearing the colors of the institutions from which they have graduated. Masters wear a long, closed sleeve with a slit near the upper arm; the hood is mid-sized and lined with the traditional colors of the institution granting the degree. Bachelors wear a long, pointed sleeve; the hood is small. Those graduating with honors wear a gold cord around their shoulders. Hoods are lined with colors of the institution granting the degree (or one with which the wearer is associated), and trimmed with velvet of the color distinctive of their degree. Tassel colors correspond. Donna Campbell Interim Vice President for Instruction The procession of the faculty and the use of the mace also have significance in the ceremony. The order of the faculty and administration is by seniority. John Patrick is the senior faculty member and carries the mace. Patrick has taught Health and Physical Education, and coached at CBC since 1978. There is no set order for the procession of graduates. The bronze mace was commissioned for the 1996 commencement ceremony. It was designed and crafted by Tom McClelland, former adjunct instructor for art, using the “lost wax” bronze casting technique. The walnut shaft was turned on a lathe. The flame of the mace represents the eternal flame of knowledge through education. The triangular base below the flame reflects the strongest geometric figure, and also symbolizes the Tri-Cities.
