M. Bruce Stokes has been the Attorney for an Emergency Medicine group located in Richmond for many years, and comes highly recommended for this presentation. Ms. Stokes has a broad scope of knowledge, not only with regard to Emergency Medicine, but with hospital systems and their interactions with EM, as well as with a broad range of other physicians in the House of Medicine with whom EM physicians interact on a daily basis. She brings a wealth of knowledge to the table, invaluable to young Emergency Physicians starting their careers.
Ms. Stokes brought with her more than 26 years of extensive experience when she joined the law firm of Goodman Allen & Filetti, PLLC, as a Partner in May 2005. Ms. Stokes concentrates her practice in the area of business with a focus on the representation of physicians, physician groups, dentists and other health-care providers in all aspects of their professional evolution, including formation, operation and management issues, joint ventures, the purchase and sale of healthcare entities and regulatory compliance issues.
William D. Rogers, MD, FACEP, is the Medical Officer, Director Physicians Regulatory Issues
Team (PRIT) of the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which serves as the primary resource for physicians, other practitioners, and their societies when they encounter Medicare practices or regulations which seem to be unnecessary and burdensome. In this role Bill travels approximately 60,000 miles per year speaking to regional associations and specialty societies. Since the PRIT works to remove or modify burdensome regulations, he interacts with all of the divisions at CMS particularly the Center for Medicare Management. Bill is a 1984 graduate of the EVMS Emergency Medicine Residency program, who quickly worked his way to become an ED Director and has also served as a Regional Director for a multi-state ED staffing company. He joined CMS in 2001 as the Medical Director in the Office of the Administrator, where he advises the Administrator on technical and clinical issues and provides counsel on the impact pending regulations will have on Practitioners, as well as serving as a liaison between Medicare participating practitioners and the Office of the Administrator. This is a position he continues to hold since assuming the duties as Director of the PRIT. Dr. Rogers still finds time to practice as an attending Emergency Physician at Sibley Memorial where he works two shifts a week in the Emergency Department.
Andrew Zinkel, MD, is an Attending Physician at the Department of Emergency Medicine, and Core Faculty, Emergency Medicine Residency Program, Regions Hospital in St. Paul Minnesota. Drew is Immediate Past President and Treasurer of the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association. Following a brief update on what EMRA is doing we get to the meat: what questions to ask at your interviews, what to look for in a contract, and how to compare different jobs using resources that are available through EMRA that Drew found quite helpful in getting his current position. Enrique L. Tomeu is a Financial Representative with Financial Security Management, based in Virginia Beach. Since receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from the University of Colorado, Enrique has used his unique abilities with economics, finance and mathematics to assist both companies and individuals with wealth accumulation and capital preservation. An avid runner, cyclist and a two-time Ironman triathlon finisher, Enrique has a proven determination to see any challenge to the finish line. He knows that one must consistently train and negotiate obstacles to be successful at a given task. Enrique applies this same dedication in working with his clients. Whether it is planning for retirement or preparing for the day when a family can crack their nest egg and start withdrawing funds, Enrique is committed to ushering clients through the ever-changing financial environment. He believes “retirement is a lot like climbing Mt. Everest – the goal is not just to summit, but to traverse safely down the other side.”
