NEW TECHNOLOGIES: LIBRARIES & BEYOND CONFERENCE
9:00 AM to 9:30 AM 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM REGISTRATION, CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST AND NETWORKING
WELCOME: ESTRELLA IGLESIAS, SEFLIN BOARD PRESIDENT MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS: JEANNETTE SMITHEE, SEFLIN DIRECTOR OF STAFF DEVELOPMENT SERVICES KEYNOTE ADDRESS: LIBRARY AUTOMATION AFTER WEB 2.0: INTEGRATING SOCIAL NETWORKING CONCEPTS INTO THE
LIBRARY INFRASTRUCTURE
Marshall Breeding, Director for Innovative Technologies and Research for the Vanderbilt University Libraries have been engaged with Web 2.0 concepts for the last few years with positive results. We’ve seen widespread adoption of blogs, wikis, and interest in social networking sites by libraries. Opening up library resources for end-user interactions, adopting multimedia content, and other Web 2.0 concepts have gone a long way to help libraries resonate with Web-savvy patrons. Yet, the evolution of the Web doesn’t end with Web 2.0. Much of the current use of Web 2.0 components creates silos of content and services that may even channel library users away from the library’s core products. What comes next? How will the next round of library technologies bring social and collaborative concepts into our core technical infrastructure?
SEFLIN TECHNOLOGY UPDATE
Charles Mayberry, SEFLIN Director of Information Services SEFLIN has added new services that are available for all library staff. Web 2.0 functions include blogs, chat, and posting of online professional profiles via the SEFLIN Library Staff Networking Directory. Another new service, SEFLIN Connect provides state-of-the-art web conferencing, online meeting and presentation services for library staff.
Thank You Conference Sponsors!

Rich Ackerman, Director of Electronic Resources and Web Services & Carrie Gits, Assistant Director of Reference at Nova Southeastern University
Check your pockets. Is there a mobile device in there? Whether it is a Nokia, BlackBerry, iPhone, or other PDA, chances are your patrons are using them too. Representing the latest and smallest in portable computing, smartphone usage is growing even in the current recession. How is your library taking advantage of this new platform? Many libraries and library vendors are creating mobile applications, resources and services. Creating a mobile presence for your library need not cost big bucks or involve expensive ILS upgrades. A simple mobile-friendly website can provide operational hours, directions, contact information, and a feedback channel. This session will look at leading edge examples of libraries using portable applications, provide attendees with a take-home toolkit to create their own mobile library page, and identify resources for learning and keeping up.
