THE MASTERCARD FOUNDATION MICROFINANCE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM POSITION: LOCATION: DURATION: Microfinance Intern Toronto, Ontario 3-5 months The MasterCard Foundation is currently seeking a Microfinance Intern with a strong research and writing background to assist in the MasterCard Foundation’s Microfinance Program. ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION Located in Toronto, Canada, The MasterCard Foundation was created through the generosity of MasterCard customer financial institutions at the time of the MasterCard initial public offering in May 2006. The Foundation has more than $1 billion in assets. The Foundation is an independent, private foundation with two charitable objects: microfinance and youth education. Decisions related to operations, strategy and programs are made by the Foundation’s Board of Directors and Management. The Foundation’s vision is to make the global economy work for everyone. With a stated mission to advance effective and innovative programs in microfinance and youth learning worldwide, the Foundation supports programs to create opportunities for people to harness their own skills and resources to improve their quality of life. Its programs serve youth and poor people around the world who are economically active or who want to become economically active. ABOUT THE FOUNDATION’S MICROFINANCE PROGRAM The microfinance program goal is to “expand access and increase the reach of microfinance to improve the quality of life for people of all ages”. Specifically, programs focus on Sub-Saharan Africa and opportunities for youth to access financial services and address strategic enablers including technology, capacity building, and industry standards. TASKS/RESPONSIBILITIES Working with the Microfinance Program Team, the Research Intern will assist:  in developing the Foundation’s approach to strengthening microfinance in Sub-Saharan Africa, including reviewing and summarizing literature, contacting stakeholders, and scoping organizations working in the field; in developing the Foundation’s understanding of how technology can be used to improve the performance of microfinance institutions, including reviewing and summarizing literature and organizing a convening on management information systems; in supporting other Microfinance Program activities as needed.   SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE        Graduate or current student in a degree program in relevant subject matter: business administration, international affairs, international development or a related field; Demonstrated written and analytical skills. Strong interpersonal skills International work experience an asset, particularly in microfinance; Knowledge of microfinance field and major issues/debates; Proactive, engaged and a self-starter; Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. As the organization is still evolving, this position requires an individual who is flexible and adaptable, and able to manage a range of job duties Good organizational skills and demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks; Proficiency with Microsoft office applications (especially excel, PowerPoint and word); Strong written and spoken communication skills in English required    TO APPLY Current students requiring course credit are encouraged to apply for this paid internship.
