Director Strategic Marketing

Salary: Circa £60,000 per annum

The post holder reports to the Chief Executive of Marketing Manchester.

Background
In 2003 Manchester City Council set up the Marketing Co-ordination Unit (MCU).
The aim of the Unit was to develop a strategic overview of the marketing activity
delivered by the City and key stakeholders; to identify ways to develop partnerships
between sectors and to co-ordinate a cohesive approach to the marketing of the city.
In addition the Unit initiated a Brand Manchester vision for the city. In 2004 the City
appointed Peter Saville as Creative Director with the purpose of articulating and
developing the Brand Manchester vision. In 2008 the Unit transferred to Marketing
Manchester.

The Director of Strategic Marketing is responsible for managing the development
and implementation of the Brand Manchester vision.

Main Purpose

To lead with vision and strategic direction, supporting the Chief Executive, in the
delivery of a fully integrated marketing approach for Manchester, working closely
with the City Council, stakeholders and partners.

To assume guardianship for ‘Brand Manchester’, its profile and development both
within and outside the City.

To underpin the City’s position as one of the top 10 locations in Europe for
business investment and one of the world’s top 50 as a conference location.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

   1. Identify key priorities for the MCU in consultation with the Chief Executive of
      Marketing Manchester, and strategic partners where appropriate.

   2. Drive and monitor the implementation of the MCU’s work programme.

   3. To facilitate and co-ordinate Manchester’s external marketing efforts through
      marketing partnerships and ensure that Manchester participates effectively in
      the development and implementation of regional, national and international
      marketing.
4. Influence internal and external stakeholders to ensure commitment to the
   ‘original modern’ aspirational brand positioning for the city.

5. Work with strategic partners to facilitate the realisation of exemplar ‘original
   modern’ projects.

6. Coordinate and drive the appropriate use and application of the ‘original
   modern’ brand signifier.

7. Identify and exploit opportunities to communicate Manchester’s brand values
   and positioning as an international business destination in key international
   markets through targeted campaign activity, working in partnership with
   MIDAS and the City Council.

8. In partnership with the City Council, manage relationships with external
   consultants in the development, implementation and review of the commercial
   strategy to include:

       a. Preferred commercial partnerships and servicing arrangements
       b. Opportunities for co-operative marketing with external public and
          private sector organisations
       c. Maintenance of an inventory of potential sponsor benefits, including
          branding opportunities, and physical Council owned/ controlled assets
       d. Development and implementation of a sales strategy to include annual
          targets, sales categories and resources.
       e. Liaison with MCC Departments to identify areas of highest
          need/opportunity for private sector involvement and financial
          enhancement.
       f. Development and implementation of a commercial licensing strategy

9. To identify and review supporting external agencies and their marketing
   strategies providing guidance and direction where appropriate.

10. Be responsible for the marketing budgets and expenditure targets.

11. Work with the appropriate partners to ensure that the city’s image is projected
    in a relevant and appropriate manner and that all external and internal
    communication delivers against agreed perception measures.

12. To manage and develop the team for whom the postholder is responsible.

For this job we are looking for:

A graduate qualification preferably in business or marketing strategy or relevant
experience at a senior / strategic level.

Thorough understanding and demonstrable experience of delivery of marketing
strategies in a city based environment.

Demonstrable ability to lead, develop, motivate and engage others to high
performance.

Ability to manage a busy and complicated work programme within deadlines and
within budget.

A skilled negotiator to understand the needs of a variety of stakeholders and to
balance expectations whilst gaining commitment to deliver long term goals and
objectives.

An ability to communicate both orally and in writing authoritatively and succinctly at
all levels internally and to external partners and organisations.

Senior level budgetary experience to interpret financial information, identify
commercial opportunities including sponsorship deals and exercise financial control.

An influential and persuasive communicator able to define and articulate a strong
sense of purpose, engendering commitment across groups to shared objectives.

Personal and professional demeanor, credibility and presence in groups.

An enthusiastic and effective ambassador for the organisation, its stakeholders and
partners.

Goal orientated, you will bring personal energy and drive to the role, understanding
