Catalog Description
This course is for students considering a career in elementary and secondary education. It examines
professions in education, and provides an overview of teacher and paraeducator roles and
responsibilities in school age classrooms and related settings. The course may be used for satisfying
professional growth requirements for local district requirments for paraeducator training.

This course examines professions in education, and provides an overview of teacher and paraeducator
roles and responsibilities in school-age classrooms and related settings.
Learning Objectives
1. Analyze current educational issues utilizing an historical perspective of major child development
and learning theories.
2. Synthesize theoretical perspectives related to the school age child across the domains of
physical, cognitive, socioemotional, creative and moral development.
3. Apply the concepts of child development and learning theories through observation and
reflection within elementary school settings.
4. Examine the "California Standards for the Teaching Profession", set by the California
Commission on Teacher Credentialing, and analyze and interpret current research, issues in education
and elements of educational reform that apply to these standards.
5. Explore, describe and evaluate the roles, duties, legal and ethical responsibilities of educators
and paraeducators.
6. Examine effective classroom management and guidance strategies that motivate and enable
children to stay on task and are also sensitive to children's cultural, linguistic and socio-economic
diversity and differing abilities.
7. Examine teaching strategies used in the delivery of standards-based and child-responsive
curriculum.
8. Formulate a professional philosophy of elementary education.
9. Examine career options and job qualifications in the field of elementary and secondary
education.

Methods of Instruction
A. Lecture and audio-visual presentations examining the broad dimensions of elementary and
secondary education, including the historical, philosophical, and theoretical foundations
B. Large and small group discussions, personal reflection, role playing, interviews and observations
used to define appropriate elementary and secondary environments, guidance techniques, and
appropriate methods of teaching school-age children based upon principles of child growth and
development
C. Review of quizzes and exams, and individual learning activities are used to demonstrate student
comprehension of elementary and secondary programs, and to provide opportunities for analysis and
interpretation of current research, issues in education and elements of educational reform.
