					                BUSINESS CLASSES
           INTERVIEW A BUSINESS OWNER

Write a 2 page typed double spaced 12 point font paper about
a small business owner. Attach to the paper the business card
of the owner as well as any marketing material (flyers, ads,
brochures, etc.) that they have. Also include a copy of the
thank you letter that you sent to the business person after the
interview. Include a title page for the paper also.

Find a business owner that will give you some answers to questions and information

about owning a small business. Ask either someone you know that owns a business or

ask your friends and family for a contact name. You can also either call or go to a small

business in Scripps Ranch and explain that you are a student at SRHS taking a business

class and ask for help with this assignment. Make sure to make an appointment with the

business owner for the interview. The following is the format for the 6 paragraphs of the

paper. You can ask the suggested questions as well as some of your own. If the owner

does not feel want to answer a question that is OK also.

Title Page- include the name of the business owner, name of the business,
and your name.

Paragraph 1 – Description of Business and Owner
Type of Business
Products and/or services
Location of the business
Number of employees
How long have they been in business?
Is owner the original owner?
Make sure to get a business card from the owner to turn in with your typed paper.
Paragraph 2 – History of the Business
When did the company start?
How did the owner get the idea for the business?
How did the owner get the money to start the business and how much was needed?
Why did the owner think there was a need for the type of business?
How did the owner decide on the name and logo?
How long before success for the business started?
Did the owner ever feel unsure about success?
What challenges did the owner face when starting?

Paragraph 3 – Marketing
Who is the target market (age, gender, income level, education)? In other words, who is
the typical customer for this business?
How does the owner market the product and/or service to this typical customer – what
kind of advertising, what media, etc.?
Get a copy of brochures, flyers, menus or any other type of marketing material. Attach to
the final paper.

Paragraph 4 – Competition
Who are the competitors for the business?
What is unique or special about the product and/or service that makes the customers buy
there?
How does the owner try to attract new customers?

Paragraph 5 – Qualities and Skills of an Entrepreneur, Advice for
Student
What are some of the benefits of owning your own business?
What skills/qualities does an entrepreneur have to possess to be successful?
What are some of the common challenges does an entrepreneur face?
What advice do you have for someone who would like to have their own business?

Paragraph 6 - Student Evaluation of What Was Learned Through the
Interview
What specifically was similar in the interview to what you have learned in class through
creating your business?
What new insight did you gain from the interview about the work life of an entrepreneur?
From what you have learned so far in the class as well as the interview, what is your
opinion of becoming an entrepreneur one day in the future?

Remember to thank the person that you interviewed for their time and help.
Write a one paragraph thank you letter and send or give it to the
entrepreneur. Also attach a copy of the thank you letter to your paper.
