                                             success in Greece!

The European Road Safety Charter concluded its national signing events tour on the 3rd of
March in the amphitheatre of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks in Athens,
Greece. The event was a huge success as it attracted not only a large number but also a variety
of organizations that were willing to commit to road safety related actions.

Mr. Argyris Peroulakis head of Communications for the Representation of the European Commission
in Greece welcomed the participants and the signatories to the event. He continued on to briefly
describe the European Road Safety Charter and to explain the significance of such initiatives. Mr
Peroulakis presented some statistics regarding the current road safety situation in Greece and
emphasised on the need for road safety related actions.

Mr. Spyros Vougias Vice-Minister at the Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks expressed
the importance of road safety related actions and explained that the current situation in Greece is
mainly due to the fact that road safety had not been raised on time as an issue of great importance,
the lack of coordination amongst the responsible bodies was also a contributing factor for today’s
situation. Mr Vougias presented the measures that are taken in order to improve the current
situation and described those that are planned for the future in terms of making the country’s roads
safer. According to the Vice-Minister the Hellenic Government is aiming to significantly decrease the
number of accidents and to reach the European objectives within the next decade. As such the
quality of life will be improved of which road safety is of the greatest importance.
