Description

These are the papers of Salvation Army Hong Kong and Macau Command 1931-2007.

In March 1930, the Salvation Army was requested to undertake women's work in Hong
Kong, which was pioneered by Majors Dorothy Brazier and Doris Lemon. This work was
directed from Peking until 1935 when the South China Command was established in
Canton. In 1939 Hong Kong became the Army's administrative centre. Later Command
headquarters moved to Kowloon. In 1999, a pioneer office was appointed to the Special
Administrative Region of Macau and Salvation Army work began there officially on 25
March 2000. After almost a year of work, The Salvation Army was officially inaugurated in
Macau and the Hong Kong Command was renamed the Hong Kong and Macau
Command.

As Hong Kong and Macau Command does not have an archive or facilities suitable for
holding records, papers from the Territory fall into the collecting remit of the International
Heritage Centre. Records from the Territory have been collected however on an ad hoc
basis by the IHC, there has been no organised transfer of series of records and many
records will still exist within the Territory itself.

The material here has therefore been organised into a logical structure. It is assumed that
at a later stage more records from the Territory may be collected and added to this
catalogue.

Arrangement

The arrangement of the records is as follows:

HKM 1: Reports
HKM 2: General papers

HKM 4: Corps
