             Spring Conference
On Wednesday, April 23rd, SSS Alum, Joy Yang ‘02 received the 2008 MN TRiO Achiever
Award for her accomplishments and her contribution to MN TRiO. The award was
presented to Joy by Kathy Glampe, Director of SSS who nominated her for this award.

“In life, a person can be successful if there is someone to believe in that person, to support,
and to give encouragement. TRiO has done that for me and is still doing so. I am a first-
generation Hmong American who was born to parents who hardly spoke English and lacked
an elementary education. We lived on welfare and in public housing in the poorest part
of Saint Paul, MN. I almost lost my father at age 13 to a semi-truck car accident, which
left him mentally and physically disabled. I married at age 15 and had my first child the
following year. Student Support Services believed in me and gave me a chance. The TRiO program staff did not
just help me academically, but also emotionally. With their support, I graduated with honors as a Bill Gate’s
Millennium Scholar. I am grateful to have had TRiO be my guide to success.”- Joy Yang ‘02
