POST TITLE: Pest Control Supervisor                 POST NO. 50310

1.    JOB PURPOSE

      The primary purpose of this post is to assist in the provision of a pest control
      service to residential and business customers in Bath and North East Somerset.

      As one of a team, to contribute to the general management development and
      review of the Team and Unit, both in terms of service provided and staff, in
      accordance with the Council’s Vision and Values, policy and other objectives.
      In doing this to ensure maximum effectiveness and efficiency.

2.    PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

2.1   Departmental

      a)    With the Principal Environmental Health Officer participate in the
            formulation of detailed team objectives and policies.

      b)    With the Principal Environmental Health Officer ensure the effective and
            efficient implementation of Council policies and the achievement of the
            Council’s objectives, including financial ones.

      c)    To contribute to cooperative working across services in accordance with
            the Council’s Vision and Values. To contribute to cross-service initiatives
            as required.

      d)    To assist in ensuring the Team’s services are responsive to community
            needs and that equal opportunity and health and safety issues are
            identified and addressed effectively.

      e)    To assist in ensuring effective external and internal working relationships
            are established and maintained with organisations and agencies relevant
            to the work of Neighbourhood Environment Services.
2.2   Functional


      a)     Organise and administer the day to day work and attendant requirements
             of the Pest Control Officer/Technical Officer and the Pest Control Officers.

      b)     Synchronise routine pest control service requests and commercial visits in
             accordance with fluctuating seasonal demand and emergency resource
             contingencies.

      c)     Ensure visits and revisits of the pest control team staff are collated and
             recorded in order that the effectiveness and efficiency of the team can be
             monitored, measured and adjusted where necessary.

      d)     Manage pesticide and rodenticide stock levels and organise provision of
             transport, personal protective, spraying, lifting, climbing and other
             equipment needed by Pest Control Officers when carrying out their duties.

      e)     Be responsible for the health and safety of the pest control service.

      f)   Carry out and implement findings of statutory risk assessments and
             assessments of substances hazardous to health. Maintain the directory
             of substances used by the service with appropriate usage and hazard
             data sheets.

      g)     Survey, assess, and price new requests for routine pest control contracts
             and ad hoc treatments. Ensure authorised new work is incorporated into
             established schedules.

      h)     Monitor and review the progress of existing pest control contracts, effect
             adjustments and make recommendations at their annual renewal
             concerning pricing and service intervals.

      i)     Provide customers with technical advice/information and be available for
             media comment on pest related incidents or issues.

      j)     Prepare leaflets and customer advice information sheets on pest related
             matters.

      k)     Be responsible for collecting monies from Officers in the Pest Control
             Service which have been collected from customers in payment for pest
             control services. Ensure organised and safe delivery of such monies for
             banking.

      l)     Be responsible for the pest control building. Ensure routine cleanliness,
             arrange supplies, report defects, arrange maintenance and ensure
             security.

3.    QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

3.1   Essential

      a)     BTEC in Environmental Health Studies or other commensurate
             qualification.

      b)     At least three years’ experience of operational pest control.

      c)     Royal Society of Health, British Pest Control Association Certificate of
             Competency in Pest Control or approved industry standard training.

      d)     High level of communication and interpersonal skills, including those
             necessary to negotiate solutions to problems and mediate in
             confrontational situations involving both the general public and
             businesses.

      e)     Ability to work in a supervisory capacity, as a team member and alone on
             varied and sometimes complex matters, making decisions which are
             sound and legally sustainable.

      f)    A clean driving licence covering Category B1.


3.2   Desirable

      a)     A relevant management qualification.

      b)     Other pesticide related technical qualification(s).

4.    Dimensions

      Not applicable.

5.    Physical Effort

      This post requires continuous physical effort throughout the working day. The
      postholder will be required to lift and carry equipment from vehicles and work at
      height with the aid of ladders.

6.    Working Environment

      This post is subject to continuous environmental pressure throughout the year
      in terms of heat, noise, smell, (cold, wet and heat). The postholder will be
      required to use pesticides on a daily basis. All necessary personal protective
      equipment will be issued to which the postholder will be responsible for.

7.    Health & Safety

      The post holder must ensure that:

           appropriate personal protective clothing is worn as necessary when on
            duty.
           the Councils Health and Safety policies are complied with at all times.

8.    General

      commensurate with the level of the post.
