                                                 33 Variations: Opening Soon
This recent Broadway sensation is a stunning inquiry
into the creative mind and its mysteries. Katherine
Brant, a brilliant musicologist is driven – even at the ex-
pense of her adult daughter’s happiness – to unlock the
puzzle of why Beethoven spent the last years of his life
writing thirty-three variations on a simple waltz by an in-
significant musical hack. This inspiring drama shows
both Katherine Brant and Beethoven in a titanic struggle
against time and task; each divinely tortured but divinely
                                                 triumphant.

                                              William Gibson

Created by one of America's major dramatists, this touching, funny and
highly imaginative retelling of the Christmas story brings new relevance
to its timeless subject. "Angelic…beguiling wit and humor…as likeable as
it is lively…" —Boston Herald-American. "…a joyous celebration, a poign-
ant tale…" —Syracuse Herald-Journal. "…a gift of love and hope to the
         world." —Syracuse Post.

THE STORY: Dealing with the story of Mary and Joseph and the birth of
Jesus from a fresh and richly creative point of view, the author combines
a series of deftly constructed short scenes, traditional Christmas music,
and often antic characterizations into a wholly original theatre piece. The
flow of the action follows the Biblical recounting, but is enhanced by a
tree, a sheep and a donkey who talk (and most amusingly); a beguiling
Mary who had heretofore decided that men and marriage were not for
her; a suddenly cautious Joseph who now contends that he is too old for
his intended (having earlier scoffed at Mary for expressing the same
thought); and a flustered boy-angel who directs the action from a prompt-
book and manages to get only the most strangled, bleating sounds from
his trumpet. But, through all the lively and resourceful happenings, the
true significance of the occasion is never lost, and the underlying mood
and spirit of reverence is, if anything, enhanced and made new by the
distinctive approach of this joyful and unique retelling.

Ben Harper steals ten thousand dollars. Just before being sent to prison he hides the money in his
daughter’s doll, setting in motion a thrilling, frightening, and heartfelt story. For sharing Ben’s
prison cell is Harry Powell, aka The Preacher, who will do anything to get his hands on the stolen
                                  money. Anything, including murder.

In 1954, Davis Grubb’s southern gothic tale THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER hit the New York Times
Best Seller list and stayed there for several weeks. The 1955 film version directed by Charles
Laughton (his only time behind the camera) and starring Robert Mitchum and Shelley Winters has
gone on to be named one of the 100 greatest films of the 20th Century. Now Stephen Cole (book
& lyrics) and Claibe Richardson (music) have adapted Grubb's novel into a musical. Lyric Stage is
proud to present this great new American musical, winner of the prestigious Edward Kleban Award,
                                  with a full orchestra.

Davis Gaines will star as The Preacher (Mitchum) opposite Theatre World Award winner Julie Johnson as Willa Harper
(Winters). Cheryl Denson will direct Lyric Stage's production with music direction by Scott A. Eckert. Scenic Design is by
Scott Osborne, Lighting Design is by Julie Simmons Moroney and Costume Design is by Drenda Lewis.

DAVIS GAINES performed the title role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera more than 2,000 times, for over five
million people, during his run on Broadway, in Los Angeles and San Francisco, where he received the Bay Area Critics’ Award for
Best Actor. Subsequently, he was chosen by Hal Prince and Lloyd Webber to play the leading role in the world premiere of Whistle
Down the Wind in Washington, D.C. Other Broadway and national tour credits include Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera, Cornelius
Hackl in Hello, Dolly! with Carol Channing, Camelot with Richard Burton and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas with Alexis Smith.

Cat and the Fiddle, Pippin and the Encores production of The Boys From Syracuse. He appeared in Damn Yankees as Joe Hardy
directed by the legendary George Abbott and played Anthony Hope in the 20th anniversary concert productions of Sondheim’s
Sweeney Todd in Los Angeles, London, New York, San Francisco and at Ravinia Festival.

at Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl. He has also performed in cabaret at New York’s Rain-
bow and Stars, Hollywood’s Cinegrill and San Francisco’s Plush Room. His voice can be heard on 30 cast recordings and compila-

      Panel Discussion with Bang DANG

      “Deconstructing the Design Process”

      Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.

      23 November 2010

Dallas Center for Architecture, 1909 Woodall Rodgers Freeway, Ste. 100.

                                                                            .

Designers discuss openly and honestly the origins, complexities
and contradictions of their own de-
      sign process. How does one
begin that initial sketch on a blank sheet of paper? Where does
that mo-
ment of clarity come from? How much of a factor is intuition?
How is this process refined and tested?

                                           2010 Edith Baker Art Scholarship

Awarded to Brookhaven College student Brian Hauser
The Dallas Art Dealers Association (DADA) 25th anniversary festivities began with a reception for the winner of DADA’s
Edith Baker Art Scholarship and Artist Career Development Fund on Friday, September 24, 2010 at the Irving Arts Center,
3333 N. MacArthur Boulevard. The DADA Scholarship Committee juried the 14 finalists chosen by visual art faculty mem-
bers of the Dallas County Community College District. The winner, Brian Hauser of Brookhaven College, received $4,000,
and may obtain a mentorship and an internship with a DADA member if he so chooses. Call 214-914-1099 for more informa-
     tion.

Brian Hauser was born in Denver, Colorado in January 1975. He has been in Dallas for 20 years, where he graduated from
the Art Institute of Dallas in 1997 with an Associate’s Degree in Visual Communication. Two years ago he decided to come
to Brookhaven College to take Continuing Education classes. After two semesters, it was suggested that he take the courses
for credit. Printmaking was something that he originally took to fill out his schedule but it quickly became the primary interest
of his art studies. Brian is completing his last semester in printmaking at Brookhaven this fall and will continue study for his
B.F.A. at Arizona State University in 2011.

The finalists were Francisco Alvarado of Brookhaven, Suzan Hawkins and Mary Thomas of Cedar Valley, Thien Ho and An-
tony Sarelli of Eastfield, Gonzalo Trujillo and Caitlin Ramsey of Mountain View, Christopher Gonzalez and Pavlina Panova of
North Lake, Zachariah Montoya and Robert David Reedy of Richland, and Raymond Butler and Janet Aguirre of El Centro.

The jury was Kevin Vogel, Kenneth Craighead, Edith Baker, Marcie Inman, Sue Flynn and Lisa Taylor. DADA thanks Eddy
Rawlinson and Marcie Inman for coordinating the exhibition.

ABOUT THE EDITH BAKER ART SCHOLARSHIP

     AND ARTIST CAREER DEVELOPMENT FUND

In celebration of its 20th anniversary in 2005, the Dallas Art Dealers Association (DADA) created the Edith Baker Art Schol-
arship and Artist Career Development Fund, honoring the respected owner of The Edith Baker Gallery in Dallas. One of
DADA's founding members, Edith directed The Edith Baker Gallery for nearly thirty years before retiring in 2004. The Edith
Baker Art Scholarship benefits a student pursuing study of the visual arts through a cash award and career development ac-
tivities such as a gallery show, a mentorship, and an internship. Proceeds from individual donations, annual DADA events,
and collection jars at each DADA member location support the Edith Baker Art Scholarship, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organiza-
tion. Visit www.dallasartdealers.org or e-mail info@dallasartdealers.org for more information.

located at 2351 Performance Drive at Lookout and Glenville

the Hill Performance Hall. "We have been delighted with the
Eisemann concert hall and look forward to another great year,"
notes Mr. Jones. "Every citizen of Richardson can be proud of
                                                                   this outstanding performance facility."

The four concert series will include a wide variety of musical selections targeted to appeal to all age groups. "The Richardson
Community Band has developed a reputation of performing a variety of music for everyone's taste," notes band President
Laura Young. "This season will be no exception."

The Richardson Community Band has a long standing tradition of paying tribute to America's March King, John Philip Sousa,
by ending each concert with a Sousa march. "Sousa wrote 136 marches and we have performed a great number of them,"
notes conductor G.W. Jones. "But there are a number of marches we have missed and we need to correct that." This special
musical project called Sousa Marches We've Missed began with the 2009-2010 season and will continue with the new season.
The band will perform several of Sousa's lesser known marches on each concert until they have performed all 136 marches.

Tickets for the concert series can be purchased at the Eisemann Ticket Office, on the Internet (www.eisemanncenter.com) or
by telephone (972-744-4650). Individual concert tickets are $7.00 for adults, $5.00 for children (K-12) & senior citizens. Season
ticket packages and family passes are also available.

                                What is Cooperative Arts News?

The Mission: The CAN organization was created for the purpose of helping cooperative member
arts organizations build audiences by supporting each other. CAN will send notifications to list
members with news of member
organizations' upcoming events and other arts news of interest.

The Rules:
1. Since this is a "cooperative" of arts organizations supporting each other, member groups who
would like to post notices, agree to "receive" notifications from other member groups in return.
Individuals will have the option at any time to "opt-out" if they choose not to receive future
notifications by e-mailing the list manager.
2. In order to preserve the integrity and quality of the postings to this list and to prevent any
unwanted "Spamming," all notifications that member groups want to send through this notification
list must come through the list manager. Groups simply send an e-mail notification to the list
manager with a descriptive write-up and it will be sent. If there are multiple notifications that
need to go out, they may be grouped together to reduce the number of e-mails that are sent to
   the list.

If at anytime, you would like to be removed from this e-mail list or if you are a new organization that
would like to join, please e-mail the list manager and your request will be acted upon in a timely
manner.

As always, thank-you for supporting the performing arts in the North Texas area!

Regards,

David Witherspoon
List Manager
