There are special words that will
signal what to do… all you need to
do is look for them! They will let
you know when you need to add,
 subtract, multiply and divide. Don’t
get fooled by distracters along the
 way!

• % of discount
• % of tax
                                                                           x

You go to the store and you buy a new shirt and
pants. The they costs $6.98 for the shirt and $8.23
for the pants for a total $15.21. What percent of
tax will you pay if tax is 6%?

Once you have the total price of $15.21, you can
figure out the percent if the tax is 6%. Multiply
$15.21 x .06 (because .06 is what you have when
you move the decimal two spaces.)

   $15.21 x .06 = .9126
                                                           or .91 cents

Compute the area tells us we need to
multiply. We want to find out the area of a
rectangle, whose sides are 6 feet by 8 feet.

         6’

                                   8’

         6’ x 8’ = 48’

Remember, just like percent of tax and
compute the area these words can multiply
                the same way!
• Times
• Product
• Find the volume
• Percent
• “of” (fractions)
                                                                 x
