Welcome to the October Stag Party.

The final Debden Sprint of this year took place on the 1st October. What started out
as a nice dry day turned into a very wet sprint in the afternoon. Given the
conditions, the team of organisers and marshals did an excellent job of keeping the
event running so smoothly.

There’s not long before the end of the season so make sure you get your results in
to Steve. The current championship positions are included later in the magazine.

Don’t forget to make a note of the 3rd February 2007 for the Annual Awards Dinner.
This is due to take place at the Old Ford Manor Golf Club at Hadley Green. We’re
still waiting for exact costs and menu options – as soon as we have them they’ll be
posted out.

Due to ever increasing work commitments, I intend to produce the Stag party every
other month; with additional brief newsletters produced as required. Therefore, the
next Stag Party should be with you in early December. If you have any articles,
photos, jokes, adverts, etc for inclusion in the next magazine please pass them on to
me by the end of November.

Happy motoring…

The ramblings of David Gibbs as he makes two visits to this County in search of
motorsport heaven

Part 1 – Goodwood

Sometimes life can be too complicated. You know what it’s like I am sure. Trying to fit a
quart of activities into a pint-pot of a day and hope that nothing spills over. Unfortunately it
invariably does. And so it was when I accepted an invitation to attend as a guest the Friday
practice day at The Goodwood Revival Meeting on 1 September. I had never been to this
event so it was an opportunity that I was not going to miss.

The quart started to be poured when I said to my wife Evelyn, “I’m off to Goodwood next
Friday week. And I will take Jonathan (my son) along as well”

“You do remember that Jonathan and Katherine (his sister) are staying with friends in East
Grinstead that week” she reminded me.

I had indeed forgotten this (as my lack of memory rivals that of an ageing goldfish who has
omitted to tie any knots in his metaphorical handkerchief) but I smiled benignly, lied that
this had not slipped my mind and that this was no problem as we would pick them up on the
way.

“And they have a weekend of windsurfing racing in Weymouth that Saturday and Sunday”
she added.

Now that one I had remembered and I indignantly defended the proper working action of
my brain cells. “I know they do. We can fit this all in easily” I replied. The pint pot was
starting to fill up!

My plan of action was faultless. Hitch up our large windsurfing trailer and set off before the
crack of dawn……drive around the M25 from Chingford to East Grinstead……bundle the kids
into the car…..drive to near Goodwood and unhitch the trailer leaving it in a lay-bye (hoping
that it would not be stolen)….get dropped off by my wife at Goodwood (who would then go
shopping, adding to my monthly VISA bill misery)……spend the day inhaling methanol and
Redex……get picked up again……find the trailer….and drive to Weymouth arriving as fresh
as a daisy. Simple - what could go wrong?
Well, the M25 for a start, that marvellous piece of tarmac and concrete that encircles
London and which exhibits a vice-like grip on its unwary travellers. I am absolutely positive
that Drake circumnavigated the globe in his sailing ship, the Golden Hind, in a shorter time
than modern-man takes to complete one circuit of this hateful highway in his BMW 5 series
on any Friday of the year.

The plan did work, after a fashion, it was just that the timescales were a bit elongated from
those that I had envisaged* so an arrival at Goodwood at 8.30am (sharp) turned into
10.30am (rather blunt) and nautical Weymouth eventually hove into view at a belated
9.00pm rather than a timely 5.30pm. The pint pot had overflowed!

[* I refuse to adopt the American “envisioned”, or any other similar completely made-up words that I
have seen creeping into English text]

But (and this is a very big but) it was all worth it as The Revival proved to be a great day
out with its mix of cars from decades past, famous names from motorsport (and elsewhere)
current and past, wonderful atmosphere and period costumes. Thankfully, we also had
pretty good weather to enjoy all of this.

Peter Brock – Holden Rowan Atkinson/Stirling Moss - Jaguar

Although, or perhaps because, it was practice day, there was a serious commitment from a
number of drivers to drive at ten tenths, or eleven tenths in the case of Adrian Newey and
Dario Franchitti, who rearranged their E-Types and some Armco in their attempts to post a
quick time. In the main though the drivers kept it all together.

For me it was very difficult to pick a favourite era of cars – I readily admit to drooling
uncontrollably for most of the day – but probably most of my saliva was reserved for the
cars of the 1960s as they were the ones that adorned my bedroom wall as a small child
(later to be torn down in favour of that famous poster of the rear view of a “cheeky” young
lady playing tennis who had evidently forgotten to put on her underwear that day!). The
sound of Cobras, Corvettes, Jaguars, Astons and Ferraris thundering across the start line
continually sent a shiver down my spine.

Also, for the even more discerning (i.e. the Morgan enthusiasts and owners) there were no
less than two, very rare, lightweight SLR Morgans and a couple of very quick 3-wheeler
Aeros.

In the skies of Sussex, eight Spitfires flew in formation, the most that I have ever seen in
the air at any one time – what a great sight. It never fails to amaze me how a mechanical
sound can be so evocative.

Back on the ground, but away from the track, it was possible to eat until one’s stomach
yelled enough and to spend an inordinately large amount of hard-earned cash on all sorts of
car related goodies, or cars themselves at the Bonhams auction at the end of the day. I left
before the auction, knowing that lack of will power might allow my hand to rise up,
untroubled by the fact that it was unsupported by sufficient cash for any purchase.

Regrets? Only one. As I had to drive after leaving Goodwood I could not enjoy to any great
extent the copious amounts of alcohol that my hosts had on offer. Oh well, next time I will
just have to fly in by helicopter, a Bell Jet Ranger of course. In my dreams!!!

                         Special Offer for HCAAC Members.

1983 Renault 5 Gordini Turbo Modified Class for
                         Sprinting. With Trailer and Spares.

Offered to HCAAC members at a fraction of its' original cost is
my highly modified 5 Gordini Turbo. I built this car during 2002
                         – 2003 and ran it once, as a test, at Debden in October 2003.
As a result of my two year stay in the USA the car has been in
dry storage since that date. Although I am now back in the UK
and the car needs very little work to return it to competition,
other matters and projects prevent me from putting the car
back on the track and I will shortly be loosing my storage
facility. Therefore to HCAAC members the complete package is
offered at 1500 GBP or near offer for a very quick sale.

Motor Racing Jewellery (by Linda Scarborough)

I am a jeweller by trade and interested in motor racing so when I was commissioned by the
BRDC to make some jewellery with a motor racing theme I was really pleased to accept. As
their club is based at Silverstone the main design basis would be the circuit, the clubhouse
(which is a very distinctive design itself), the BRDC insignia and of course the racing cars
and associated emblems, such as the chequered flag and steering wheel. The jewellery is in
the form of charms, pendants, cufflinks and a seal ring. All of the masters had to be made
using various methods such as hand working, engraving, cad-cam, wax modelling and then
casting in silver or gold and finally enamelling and hand finishing. The whole process has
taken 10 months to complete and has been a very interesting project including contacting
Sir Frank Williams on the suggestion of HCAAC member Howard Dawson to ask Sir Frank for
his permission to use the F1 Williams car design in case there was a copyright issue. The car
was based on the 1996 Championship winning car driven by Damon Hill, which thankfully I
did get the okay as I had made it by then! The other fortunate event was that Damon Hill
was elected the new President of the BRDC which made the little miniature even more
relevant. I could choose two cars from Silverstone's fantastic archive model collection on
which to model my miniatures and one of which was the Williams as the modern racing car
and for the old racing car I chose a 1935 ERA in hill climb specification as shown by its
double rear wheels. Somebody told me this car is still driven round Silverstone in historic
meetings and looking wonderful in its pale green livery. It felt quite an honour to be able to
handle these beautiful pieces of history but I didn't realise all the cabinets I had opened had
to be 're-vacuumed' to produce an air lock for dust!
The circuit charm didn't seem complete without showing all the different circuits from the GP
to the inside Stowe circuit, and the steering wheel is a generic racing design similar to those
used on many race cars.
I would like to make more pieces with a motor racing connection as this has been such an
