To all English Teachers in Durban and surrounds:

Poetry Competition for Grade 8-10 Students
                                    Cash prizes (entry form enclosed)
Theme: What makes you happy to be living in Durban? (Max. 12 lines)
We are delighted to advise that, in conjunction with the New Writers’ Book Fair, to be held at Westville
Boys High School on 26th July 2008, we are running a poetry competition for students.

Prizes:
 On top of the cash prizes for the individual students, the school that the winners attend will also
receive the same amount in cash.
Our aim:
 To engender pride and positivity – the theme for the poetry is ‘What makes you Happy about
        living in Durban?’
 To promote literacy and the love of reading and writing in the youth of our country, as well as a
sense of achievement for the students – we will publish a book of the winning and highly
        commended entries.
The book:
 Will be launched at a separate launch and prize giving – after the Book Fair, at a time and venue
        to be announced.
 This book will be made available to the schools at a discounted price, so that they may in turn sell
it to parents and interested parties, as a fund-raising venture.
Entries:
 We have enclosed an entry form, which we would ask you to distribute to the relevant students,
collect the completed poems (perhaps in a box at the secretary’s office) and to reach us by Friday
        27th June 2008.
 Students in Grades 8-10 are eligible – one entry per student – maximum 10 lines
 Entries will be judged by a successful and published poet.
 Poems on display at the Book Fair will also be voted for by the public (separate prize for The
        People’s Choice)

Please contact us at any time if you need further information.
