The Brushless Constant-Voltage Synchronous Alternators 1FC6 are the result of our experience for some
decades.

The range has been extended by some types of Serie 1FC5.

Explanation of generator type design

The example below shows what the generator type design mean

1FC6 506 8       1FC6 indicates the generator family.
                 Families are 1FC6 and 1FC5. When the letter J (1FJ6, 1FJ5) stands
                 instand of the letter C it means that the generators with protection degree
                 IP44, IP45, water cooled i.e. provided with closed cooling system
                 With built-in single tube or double tube water / air cooler here involved.

                  506 indicates the generator size (in B3 version it means that height
                  from the generator support to the shaft centerline is 500 mm)

                  8 is number of poles ( 4 means 4 poles, 6 means 6 poles, 8 means
                  8poles, 3 means 10 poles and 5 means 12 poles)

General
Generators 1FC6 (1FJ6) to the size 56_ are standard rated and meet technical data in the catalogue.

Generators 1FC5 (1FJ5) size 63_ are standard rated and meet technical data in the catalogue.

Generator 1FC5 (1FJ5) sizes 71_ and 80_ are made to order and completely meet the customer’s
requirements. Depending on this the proper selection of generator size and designing to the requested
technical characteristics are effected.

              Brushless constant-voltage synchronous alternators


Application

The brushless constant-voltage synchronous alternators are of the self-excited type with
an electronic voltage regulator integrated in the excitation unit. They are used as main and
standby units in land-based power installations and for ship's electrical systems and can
be driven by internal combustion engines or gas, steam and water turbines and electric
motors.


Construction

The alternator comprises the main machine (revolving-field machine with cylindrical rotor
and damper winding), exciter (revolving armature machine) and excitation equipment.

The excitation power is supplied to the rotor of the main machine via rotating rectifiers.

The units have open-circuit cooling.


Excitation system

The combination of an excitation unit with a thyristor voltage regulator is called a
THYRIPART®-excitation system. The excitation unit supplies a load-dependent field
current slightly higher than would be required for producing the rated voltage. The
regulator variably reduces the field current as necessary to obtain constant alternator
voltage. This method of load-dependent excitation (compounding) results in excellent
dynamic response to load switching applications and short-circuits. A block diagram is
shown on page 7.


Standards and Requirements

The alternators conform to applicable IEC requirements, DIN standards and VDE codes
and particularly to VDE 0530, Specification for rotating electrical machines. They can also
be made to comply with foreign standards and requirements.

Output

The rated outputs (kVA) given in the selection tables are valid for

- continuous running duty at 50 or 60 Hz rated frequency
- power factors from 0.8 to 1,
- class F insulating
- sinusoidal load current
- symmetrical load


Site rated output

A deduction must be made from the nominal output to VDE 0530 (rated output at 400C
and 1000 m a.s.l.) in each of the following cases:

1. Coolant temperature exceeds 400C and with marine alternators to classification
   society rules (see Selection Tables).

     A special inquiry should be made if the coolant temperature exceeds 550C.

     At coolant temperature 300C the mean output is increased by 4 % over that
     permissible at coolant temperature 400C.

2.   Site altitude exceeds 1000 m a.s.l. (does not apply for marine alternators)

If no coolant temperature is stated, it will be assumed that the altitude-induced reduction in
the cooling efficiency is compensated by a lower coolant temperature. i.e. that adjustment
of the maximum temperature rise to VDE 0530 is not necessary (no derating).

The following coolant temperatures are obtained for the thermal utilization corresponding
to Class F insulation:

Voltage and frequency

The alternators are suitable for operation at 50 Hz and at 60 Hz as shown in the selection
tables.

The alternator voltages are 400 V at 50 Hz and 450 V at 60 Hz.

Load voltages corresoonding to the alternator voltages are 380 V at 50 Hz and 440 V at
60 Hz.

The alternators can be supplied for voltages up to 600 V for alternators up to 1FC6 286,
otherwise up to 1100 V. Please inquire for alternators <230 V.

Enquires are also welcomed for special voltages and for frequencies other than 50 and 60
Hz.

The output and performance data (other than rated currents) correspond roughly to those
given in the Selection Tables for normal voltage.

Apart from an internal reference value potentiometer on the regulator the rated voltages
can be adjusted ± 5 % using an external panel mounting reference value setter (optional
extra).

The three-phase stator winding of the alternators is connected in star. The neutral point is
brought out.

                                     Technical data

Efficiency

The efficiency given in the Selection Tables allows for the total losses in the alternator,
including those of the field winding and excitation system. The values at rated output are
guaranteed in accordance with VDE0530.


Insulating system

The alternator windings are manufactured in Siemens DURIGNIT® 2000 insulation system
which satisfies Class F requirements to VDE 0530.

The insulating materials used are non-hygroscopic, non-tracking and withstand severe
thermal stressing.

The stator windings of the alternators are made of special enameled wire of high
hydrolysis-resisting quality or flat copper bars with mica paper.

The standard insulation uses a special resin impregnation process. This results in high
mechanical strength, vibration resistance and excellent dielectric strength and renders the
alternators suitable for operation in all climates to DIN 50 019.


Special measures

Special insulation design can be delivered where extreme exposure to water, e.g. due to
flooding or prolonged condensate formation, or high concentrations of aggressive or
electrolytically active media are to be expected. (Please enquire for further information).


Radio interference suapression

The alternators are supplied with interference suppression grade N to VDE 0875;
suppression level K on request.

Speed and direction of rotation

At the rated speed given in the Selection Tables the alternator produces the rated
frequency of 50 Hz or 60 Hz.

The alternators are made for clockwise running, when viewed from the drive end. They
can also be supplied for anti-clockwise running.

In accordance with VDE 0530, the sequence "U, V, W" of the terminals in the terminal box
corresponds to the phase sequence in clockwise rotation. For operation in parallel with an
existing system the phase sequence must be checked before making the connections.

Overspeed for alternators normally nmax = 1,2 x nN. Higher values on request.

With the alternator main switch open there are no restrictions on operating the alternators
with THYRIPART® -excitation at less than rated speed (e.g. for starting-up the prime
mover). This does not apply to special alternators with sleeve bearings which may only be
run down to about 20 % of their rated speed.



Types of construction


The alternators can be supplied in the following versions to IEC 34-7. IM = international
mounting. DIN 42 950 designations are in brackets.

For information about the different types of construction with extra or reduced prices refer
to the price list or please enquire.

Alternators 1FC6 284 to 354 can be easily adapted to various mounting situations by the
feet mountings on the housing. They can also be supplied without feet (reduced price).

If requested, flange dimensions other than those quoted in the dimensions tables can be
supplied (extra price). Please give flange diameter N and flange depth R.

                                     Mechanical data

Degree of protection

The alternators normally have degree of protection IP 23 (DIN 40 050).
The 1FJ6 45. to 56. and 1FJ5 63.,alternators have IP 54/IC 81 according to IEC.
(IC 81: closed circuit cooling system with built-on air/water cooler). See page 17.

The terminal box or terminal space has degree of protection IP 54.

Other degrees of protection on enquiry.


Air filter

An air filter can be fitted for special conditions (on request).
If the design calls for air filters, it is recommended that thermistor sensors are fitted in the
stator winding so that if a temperature rise occurs due to a dirty filter, an alarm or
shutdown can be given.


Anti-condensation heating

Anti-condensation heating is available for the alternators (as an optional extra).

The anti-condensation heater requires a voltage of 220 V or 110 V and has heat output of
about:


   80 W      for   1FC6 184 to 286
  150 W      for   1FC6 350 to 408
  315 W      for   1FC6 454 to 566
  630 W      for   1FC5 63.

For anti-condensation heating in marine alternators, see page 18.


Terminals and connection bus-bars

Cable entry to the 4 main connections, (U, V, W, N) and to the 2 field terminals F1, F2 can
be from the left or right, as required. The cable entry plates are normally supplied udrilled.


Paint finish

The alternators are supplied with a priming coat. Standard paint finish in RAL 7030 or
other colours or special paint finish can be provided at extra cost.

                                    Mechanical data

Moment of inertia

All values for the moment of inertia (J in kgm2) given in the Selection Tables are subject to
a tolerance of ± 10 % to VDE 0530. The values are for the rotor without coupling.


Cooling

The alternators are internally cooled with shaft-mounted fan to VDE 0530, IC 01 to IEC.
The fan provided at the drive-end draws the cooling air axially through the machine.
For details of air inlet and discharge openings see Dimension Tables.


Noise emission

The alternator noise Ievel to VDE 0530, Part 9, is not exceeded.


Vibration stability

Reciprocating engines used as prime movers impress vibrations on the alternator because
of the pulsating torque output. Permissible vibration stressing acc. to DIN 6280-11.
Please enquire if higher vibration stressing levels are expected.



Bearings

See " Spares", Page 31, for bearing allocations. Alternators up to 1 FC6 286 have
greased-for-life bearings; 1FC6 35 and above can be re-greased during operation.
If required, alternators 1FC6. 454 and larger can be fitted with sleeve bearings at extra
cost. Please enquire.

1FC5 63. alternators for marine use are generally in sleeve bearing design.

With alternators 1FC6 350 and larger, a miniature Pt 100 screw-in resistance thermometer
can be fitted in the bearing tor remote display (extra cost).


Drive and coupling

Alternators provided with two bearings can be driven by reciprocating engines via highly
flexible shaft couplings.
The coupling is not part of the scope of delivery of the alternator manutacturer.
The torsional vibration has to be calculated for rigidly coupled single-bearing alternators.
For this purpose. a preliminary alternator and shaft dimension sheet is made available.
Any shaft variations required may entail extra cost.

Steady-state voltage variation

Throughout the range from no-load to rated load at rated power factor the following
voltage regulating accuracies are achieved:


            Isolated operation
            (without droop compensation               UN ± 0.5%
            device)
            Parallel operation
            (with droop compensation                  UN ± 2.5%
            device)
            (please see page 14)


On alternators equipped with droop compensation the voltage variation in parallel
operation can be improved to the isolated-operation value by short-circuiting the droop
compensation device.
Failures in the excitation unit do not result in the voltage rising to more than 115 % of the
rated voltage.


Voltage variation on connectin and disconnectin a load

The diagram below permits approximate assessment of the average value of the sudden
voltage dip when a load is connected or disconnected.

The curves are based on the assumption that the load is switched on to the unloaded
alternator previously excited for rated voltage and that the speed remains constant.
The voltage dip occurring on switching a load onto pre-load alternator is smaller.

Upon connection of a load in the range from no load to rated load the voltage recovers its
rated value after approx. 500 ms.

Calculation examale

Let a three-phase induction motor with squirrelcage rotor be switched on to an unloaded
brushless constant-voltage synchronous alternator.


Requisite technical data:

The difference in the voltage ratings of the alternator and motor can be neglected in
estimating approximately the sudden voltage variation.

Note

If the voltage variation exceeds the given value either the load application is to be
reduced, e.g. by an appropriate starting circuit with induction motors or a larger alternator
is required.

Short-circuit current and short-circuit rating

Due to the load-dependent operation of the static excitation system the alternators meet
the requirements for lowest possible voltage dips and fast voltage recovery (e.g. after
sudden loading with large squirrel-cage induction motors). The excitation principle used
provides sustained short-circuit currents of approximately 3 to 5 times the rated current.
This enables the use of selective protective relaying. The alternators must be relieved of
the sustained short-circuit current after 5 s.

The magnitude of the sudden short-circuit current referred to the rated output to VDE 0530
at 400C (see column 1 of the Selection Tables) satisties the requirements of VDE 0530.



Unbalanced Load

In accordance with VDE 0530, the alternators can withstand unbalanced loading of up to
20 %. It should be noted, however, that the voltage variation and the rated outputs
indicated in the tables are not attained under unbalanced load.


Overload

In accordance with VDE 0530, the alternators can have an overload of 1.5 times the rated
current at rated voltage for 2 min. The alternators have been matched to the overload
capabilities of diesel engines in the within any period of 6h they can be operated at 110%
rated load for 1h at no risk of critical temeperarure rises.

Parallel operation

During the usually short period required for no-break load transfer the alternators can be
operated in parallel regardless of design variant and manufacturer.

Continuous parallel operation is possible, bearing in mind the following points:

1. All alternators are provided with a damper winding which reduces phase swinging in
   parallel operation.


2. The active-load sharing is adjusted using the governor of the driving engine. The
   speed characteristic of the engine should be linear, in coincidence and on changeover
   from rated load to no-load the speed should rise by at least 3 % and by not more than
   about 5 %.

3. The reactive-load sharing is assured by a droop compensation device.

   A droop compensation device can be in alternators 1FC6 28. to 35. if
   requested (extra cost) and is available in 1 FC6 40. to 56. and 1FC5 63. alternators.

   Thus equipped, the alternators are suitable for parallel operation with other alternators
   having the same voltage droop or with a supply system.


4. Neutral point connection

   Direct interconnection of alternator neutrals and/or those of transformers and load
   neutrals may give rise to circulating current of three times the power frequency in the
   neutral conductor. The magnitude of these currents must be measured in the
   alternator neutral conductor under the highest conceivable load conditions.
   To avoid thermal overloading of the alternators the circulating currents occurring at
   three times rated frequency should not be allowed to exceed about 50 % of the
   alternator rated current. Higher current values should be limited by means of neutral
   reactors or other equivalent means.



Alternator protection equipment

The stator winding can be provided with thermal protection in the form of PTC sensors or
resistance thermometers (at extra cost).

Please enquire where alternator protection gear necessitates opening of the neutral.
Please quote type if it is intended to use a star-point current transformer.

Alternators to be operated in parallel should be provided with reverse-power protection.

The necessary monitoring and tripping devices must be provided separately and are not
included in the alternator scope of supply.

In addition to satisfying the standards and codes named on page 3, the 1 FC6 and 1 FC5
marine alternators also conform to the requirements of the following classification

With alternators to be operated as shaft alternators (driven from the main engine or
turbine) attention must be paid to the special speed characteristic and, if applicable, to the
excess-torque protection. Please enquire for further information.

All marine alternators are subject to works inspection and acceptance as stipulated in the
Table below:

Alternators intended for use on a ship's propulsion system are subject to works inspection
and acceptance testing, irrespective of the output rating.

During overload the voltage must be kept as nearly as possible at its rated value.

") The rated output given in the Selection Tables is to be reduced to 88 %.


Air/water cooler

If required, 1FC6 45. to 56. and 1FC5 63. alternators can be supplied with a top-fitted
air/water cooler. Please enquire.

The cooler can be used for freshwater or salt water and can be of the single-tube or
double-tube type.

The type designation for the alternators is changed from 1FC to 1FJ. Due to the closed-
circuit cooling system the degree of protection has been upgraded from IP 23 to IP 54.

The electrical version of the alternator remains unchanged.

The alternators 1FJ can easily be converted for emergency operation as an open-circuit
aircooled machine if the coolant system or the cooling element fails. In this case, the
degree of protection is IP 23 with the rated output unaltered.

The rated output of the alternator type chosen thus corresponds to the values in the
Selection Tables with the associated coolant temperature.
Please provide the following information with any enquiry:
