Notes for AUSTIN FRANKLIN HARPER:
Austin lived with his parents on the original home place of his great grandfather Jesse Harm Harper, the first Harper
to settle in Gilmer Co. After attending Flat Branch School, he moved to Ellijay to live in a boarding house. About
two weeks prior to graduation, Austin moved back to his father's farm on Flat Branch after a dispute with one of his
teachers.

Shortly thereafter, he joined up with the Civilian Conservation Corps. After his commitment with the CCC ended,
Austin returned to Ellijay, & continued to work with his father on the Harper farm. It was upon his return to Ellijay
that Austin married Ruth Starks.

Austin left the Harper farm to work at the Appalachian Lumber Co. in the late 1940's. While he was working for
Appalachian, Austin & Ruth bought out Fouts Grocery Store in East Ellijay in the mid 1950's. They moved all of
the store's stock to a building located about 2 1/2 miles north of Ellijay on Ga 52 West, just in front of their house.
The building which had been previously used by Austin & his father to sell apples, became Harper's Grocer, which
remained open for business for the next twenty plus years. Ruth ran the store at first, after about three years Austin
was laid off from the Lumber Co., & began working full time in the grocery store. Harper's Grocery continued to
grow & became known for their fresh produce, because of Austin's trips to the Farmer's Market in Atlanta on
Thursday.
